  3. Natural Perspectives: Mea culpa for last column

I made a goof in my last column about the Bolsa Chica Land Trust's plan for the mesa. The error is mine, not Vic's. I said the Land Trust was going to excavate no deeper than 8 feet to bury its 2,825-gallon water tanks in the ground. Actually, the tanks will not be buried. They will be above ground, with three or four tanks at each of the four proposed Terra-Farms on the mesa.

  9. In The Pipeline: Tied together by wartime service

"That's the most beautiful thing — that flag," Helen Harris whispered to me in her thick, Greek accent, as the Boy Scouts hoisted Old Glory last week, on a warm, blustery Veterans Day.

  17. Natural Perspectives: Touring the Pacific Marine Mammal Center

The experts tell us that the ocean is now in a La Niña condition. So instead of being warm, like last winter during the El Niño, the ocean has cooled below normal. That's the explanation that we're getting for this summer of no summer. A La Niña condition bodes for a dry winter as well.
