  5. Girls Athlete of the Week: Abbey Lawrence, South River, field hockey

    The senior forward led the No. 2 Seahawks (15-1-1) to the Class 4A East region champioinship with four goals and an assist in wins over Anne Arundel County rivals Broadneck and Severna Park. In Wednesday's 4-2 semifinal win over No. 8 Broadneck, Lawrence finished with two goals. In Saturday's region title game against defending state champon and No. 4 Severna Park, she scored two goals and then assisted on Jennie Mulligan's goal in overtime that gave South River a 3-2 win. A four-year varsity player and captain, Lawrence has 20 goals and 14 assists in 17 games this season. She made a commitment to play field hockey at La Salle University. The Seahawks take a 13-game win streak into Wednesday's state semifinal game against Blake. The program is seeking its fourth state championship.
