1. Mailbag: Poseidon is no good for H.B.

[The Huntington Beach] Poseidon Desalination plan is a boondoggle plan like every one they have proposed since Tampa Bay [in Florida]. They sold the idea of a desalination plant to the Huntington Beach City Council by promising it would never cost the...

3. City Lights: Time to leave the 'colors' out of voting

There's a hilarious song by the Orange County folk singer Michael Ubaldini called "World Peace in 10 Easy Lessons," in which the narrator journeys from one potential guru to another in hopes of discovering the secret to a strife-free world. At one...

5. City Lights: 'Just remember, it's mostly good'

Once in a while, you hear a simple statement that lodges itself permanently in your way of thinking.
Once in a while, you hear a simple statement that lodges itself permanently in your way of thinking. One of those, for me, came in a conversation I had with a high school friend who was savvy for his age on global politics. We had been talking about...

7. Mailbag: Plastic bag problem starts upstream

Perhaps we should have a reasonable informative/educational community outreach rather than yet another attempt of nanny government by our city and a set of comments by a council member to create another piece of legislation that, in idealistic terms, is...

11. Quinn, Emanuel lash out at Madigan gun bill

— Gov. Pat Quinn, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Senate President John Cullerton decried a bill to legalize concealed firearms that is backed by powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan, contending it would invalidate strict local gun laws like Chicago's ban on assault weapons.

13. One man's pride in himself is inspiring

I am writing this in response to David Whiteman's May 11 letter. He complains about the great deal of media coverage received by Jason Collins, an NBA player who made history as the first active male athlete in a major North American sports league to come...

15. Editorial: 'The big problem with the Illinois House gun bill'?

Under orders from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the Illinois legislature is trying to craft a law that will allow responsible gun owners to carry concealed weapons in public. The court said the legislature has to do this, but the court didn't say how to do it. No surprise in a state as large and geographically diverse as Illinois, that's proving to be no easy task.

17. Carroll County's gun law nullification fantasy

Nullification fever is spreading across the rural counties along the Mason-Dixon Line, with Cecil, Harford and Carroll counties passing resolutions in the last month declaring their view that Maryland's new gun control law is unconstitutional. Cecil's council kicked off the trend with a resolution stating its intent that no county resources be used to enforce the law. Harford took a more moderate tack, with its councilmen merely urging more study of the constitutionality of the law.

23. Stephen Goldstein: Real scandal is how lobbyists get away with what they do

These days, the country is consumed by scandal-mania — real, or mostly trumped-up, partisan allegations of violations of the public trust, the truth of which no one knows for sure because we don't have all the facts and probably never will. We...
