These days, when we are jonesing for pizza, we are confronted with a vast array of choices even before we think about toppings. Are you in the mood for thin crust, thick crust, stuffed crust, cracker crust, deep dish or even flat bread?

  3. The Gossiping Gourmet: New treats abound at an old favorite

It's always a pleasure to dine with an old friend and 230 Forest Avenue is one of our favorites. No matter how many times we visit, the food is always reliably good. With occasional changes in the menu, there is always something new to try, if that's your pleasure (or if you're a restaurant reviewer). Chef Marc Cohen has managed to maintain a consistent level of quality.

  5. The Gossiping Gourmet: Delicious Alessa offers new location, fare

The amazing Alessandro Pirozzi has opened a new trattoria in Laguna Beach, Alessa, in the old Pomodoro space. You may have had the pleasure of dining in his Cucina Alessa in Newport or Huntington, but Laguna's version is unique. Although there are many old favorites, there are new and exciting additions as well; for instance, a proscuitto and mozzarella bar and specialty house-made fresh pastas. Gourmets will appreciate the crudo and the fragole while traditionalists will revel in Mama's meatballs and fettucine Bolognese.

  9. The Gossiping Gourmet: Big value in small-plate selections

How about a high-end restaurant where you can have a moderately priced meal? Charlie Palmer at Bloomingdale's is certainly an elegantly appointed space with superior service, urbane touches like amuses bouches, mignardises and even a pretty little package of cookies to take home; but if you bring your own wine (because there is no corkage fee) and if you limit your ordering to the extensive small-plate and first-course menus, you can have a very nice dinner indeed for a very decent price.

  17. Rustic simplicity

Laura del Principe is not a Top Chef or an Iron Chef. She doesn't have tattoos running up and down her arms or a line of cookware created in her name. Plistia, the restaurant she runs with her husband, Cesidio Decina, is tucked away in the small mountain town of Pescasseroli, in the heart of Italy's National Park of Abruzzo. It was not on the recently released World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
