1. The Gossiping Gourmet: Laguna Thai has its ups and downs

The tiny eatery Laguna Thai by the Sea has had a face lift this past year and added bamboo wainscoting and more mobile-type paper decorations swinging in the breeze, but the major new addition is a fancy wood, floor-to-ceiling wine cabinet that dominates the small room. "A" (as he is called), the chef-owner, is really into wine. He's also a jazz buff, and if you're lucky, you'll hear some really good standards mixed in with the Thai pop.

3. The Gossiping Gourmet: Thai Pepper brings authenticity

Elle's son lives in Thailand, so she is very familiar with the tiny neighborhood restaurants lining the streets of Phuket, serving fresh food made to order, with that homemade feel, for a very few baht.

It's the season to feel fluish.
It's the season to feel fluish. Help may come from something Jewish. Long called Jewish penicillin, chicken soup's power to heal has mainly been viewed as folklore but recent scientific studies have proven that it has genuine health benefits, so much so...

9. The Gossiping Gourmet: Try Thai without hurting your wallet

Tucked away in the corner of a very unprepossessing mini-mall is a tiny box of a restaurant called Thai Gulf Restaurant with a perpetual line out the door. At first, we couldn't tell if people were waiting for a washing machine at the laundromat next door or a table at the restaurant. It turns out everyone was waiting for the chance to eat dinner, and the word is it's like this all the time. However, they do take reservations and honor them.

13. The Gossiping Gourmet: Silk Thai a smooth dining experience

There are quite a few Thai restaurants in the Huntington Beach area, but Silk Thai Cuisine is an excellent one in the Newland Center, a charming little strip mall on Beach Boulevard north of Adams Avenue.

15. The Gossiping Gourmet: A marriage of coastal cuisines

The best way to describe the food at Raya might be "Mexasian." The new restaurant at the Ritz Carlton has been advertised as Latin American or Pan-Latin coastal cuisine, but that doesn't explain the presence of miso black cod with kabayaki sauce, tuna tataki salad with lemon ginger wasabi dressing or ingredients like yuzu, daikon radish, sriracha sauce or kaffir lime leaves. So we have chosen to redub it.

17. Gossiping Gourmet: Beach scenes, impressive ceviche selection

Everything we experienced at the Seafood Zone was a bit out of the ordinary. In the first place, we were the only customers in the restaurant. (They're very busy at lunch.) Secondly, the décor in the small café was the most casual we have ever encountered: bright blue folding chairs and metal tables all adorned with beer labels advertising Corona and Pacifico, walls covered with Baja-inspired beach scenes and two giant TV screens. Carlos Netto, the owner, pointed out with a sweet smile, "This is not fine dining." Also unusual was that this restaurateur was our server, and chatting with him provided the evening's entertainment. What was even more surprising was that this little restaurant serves some of the finest ceviches we've had in recent memory.

19. Make dad a cocktail on Father's Day: Here are our favorites

I curate a bi-weekly recipe column for The Times' Saturday section called "Destination: Cocktail." To date, I've culled 100 recipes created by some of the city's best bartenders, for some of the city's best bars and restaurants. I just finished poring over them all in order to pull out my favorite ones for Father's Day.

21. 6 favorite L.A. juice bars

Lately it seems like there's no L.A. neighborhood without a juice bar. They're expanding faster than you can say kale-avocado-cilantro-lemon-cucumber-caraway-jalapeno-celery smoothie. It's no wonder. Fans of juice -- the kind often made with a press and filled with ingredients you're as likely to find in a salad -- drink it for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack (it's not just for cleansing anymore). There are chains of juice bars such as Pressed Juicery, Kreation and Clover all over the Westside, as well as mom-and-pop shops in enclaves such as Los Feliz and Atwater Village. Where to get the most delicious juices? Here are six favorites:
