  1. The Gossiping Gourmet: Truffle still golden after three decades

Alan Greeley's Golden Truffle has been around for more than 30 years, and there is a reason why this neighborhood bistro has had such longevity.

  3. The Gossiping Gourmet: Carmelita's misses getting the details right

    Bienvenidos a Carmelita's, Laguna's newest Mexican restaurant.
Bienvenidos a Carmelita's, Laguna's newest Mexican restaurant. It replaces the long-gone Vietnamese Cajun restaurant on Broadway with a spiffy new renovation. With its tasteful tile and stonework accents, the remodeled interior might be called modern...

  5. The Gossiping Gourmet: Chef puts magic in her Persian dishes

Soheila Siadate is an amazing chef, working quietly in the kitchen of her little Persian restaurant, Green Rice Kabob, in a Huntington Beach strip mall, where she turns out some wonderful cuisine. Chef Soheila has a distinctive way with Middle Eastern and Persian classics. Dishes we have all eaten many times are subtly transformed by her magic touch.

  7. The Gossiping Gourmet: Laguna Thai has its ups and downs

The tiny eatery Laguna Thai by the Sea has had a face lift this past year and added bamboo wainscoting and more mobile-type paper decorations swinging in the breeze, but the major new addition is a fancy wood, floor-to-ceiling wine cabinet that dominates the small room. "A" (as he is called), the chef-owner, is really into wine. He's also a jazz buff, and if you're lucky, you'll hear some really good standards mixed in with the Thai pop.

  11. The Gossiping Gourmet: A Restaurant that's like time machine travel

Stepping into A Restaurant is like stepping into a time machine and finding oneself back in a 1940s steakhouse with dim lighting, nail-studded, dark red leather booths, wood paneling, a roaring fireplace and a buzzing bar.

  13. The Gossiping Gourmet: New treats abound at an old favorite

It's always a pleasure to dine with an old friend and 230 Forest Avenue is one of our favorites. No matter how many times we visit, the food is always reliably good. With occasional changes in the menu, there is always something new to try, if that's your pleasure (or if you're a restaurant reviewer). Chef Marc Cohen has managed to maintain a consistent level of quality.

  19. The Gossiping Gourmet: Enjoy mussels without going to Brussels

Short of eating outdoors at one of the multitudinous restaurants on the main square in Brussels, where mussels and fries ("moules frites") are the specialty, you can replicate the experience — minus the airfare — by dining at Brussels Bistro in Laguna Beach, the only authentic Belgian restaurant in our area serving this iconic dish. It even has al fresco dining.
