  1. The Gossiping Gourmet: A winner in this Corner

Time after time, we find small strip-mall restaurants in Huntington Beach that are chef-owned and reasonably priced and offer a menu with their particular, inventive slant on whatever cuisine they prepare.

  3. The Gossiping Gourmet: Peony and Sushi Corner a pleasant surprise

We were flabbergasted. We found ourselves eating possibly the best shrimp we had ever tasted.

  5. The Gossiping Gourmet: Thai Pepper brings authenticity

Elle's son lives in Thailand, so she is very familiar with the tiny neighborhood restaurants lining the streets of Phuket, serving fresh food made to order, with that homemade feel, for a very few baht.

  7. The Gossiping Gourmet: Healthy Chinese food at California Wok

T'was the season to be jolly but now tis the season of our discontent. We are unhappy with the size of our bank accounts and even more dismayed by the size of our waistlines.

  9. The Gossiping Gourmet: Sample a bit of everything at Sullivan

Sullivan may be the most curiously named Chinese restaurant we've ever been to, but more about that later. First, let us introduce you to Shiu Mei Liu, the effusive, warm and generous proprietor who welcomes you into her world with her wide, charming smile. This small, bright and pleasant storefront restaurant in Huntington Beach is definitely worth a visit.

  11. Gossiping Gourmet: A different, delicious take on Chinese

For a great night out "on the wagon," we would like to recommend the Lotus Chinese Eatery, which is one of the few Islamic Chinese restaurants in Orange County. They feature halal meats and serve no alcohol. Although there is no pork, there are a number of excellent lamb dishes. Because this is the cuisine of Western China, varieties of noodles and breads replace rice as the staple food, since wheat grows abundantly in the colder northern and western parts of the country.

  19. Review: "The Cooked Seed" by Anchee Min

When I started reading Anchee Min's latest memoir, "The Cooked Seed," I presumed there would be many commonalities between her life journey in America and mine.

  21. Chi Lin on Sunset serving up Peking duck, custom cocktails and one paparazzo

A lone paparazzo stood under a neon sign just outside the large red doors of Chi Lin on Sunset Boulevard, where the new Chinese restaurant opened Monday night. He looked around, camera ready, reminding patrons they were on the Westside.

  23. Recognition for a reserved WWII vet

Like many World War II veterans, he speaks modestly about his service. He is quiet and a polite listener, not the kind to draw attention to himself. But a few months ago, as he visited the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, other veterans noticed...
