  5. Scouts and equality

  7. Today's Buzz: Allow gay Boy Scouts?

The 1,400 members of the Boy Scouts of America’s National Council were scheduled to vote at 6 pm Thursday on whether to drop the organization’s 1978 ban on gay scouts. That ban was upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000. But four months ago, the organization raised the possibility of accepting gay scouts. Public attitudes on homosexuality have changed significantly since 1978, with 11 states now allowing same-sex marriages. Should the Scouts reverse its policy? Will accepting gays undermine Scout principles? Should policies on sexual orientation be different for youth groups? Talk about it!

  15. Scouting's misstep

At age 19, when I was an assistant scoutmaster, I was expelled from the Boy Scouts of America for being gay. The very group that had taught me the value of self-respect since I was 8 years old now told me that there was something fundamentally wrong with who I was, and am. Confronting institutional discrimination for the first time, I was overwhelmed with sadness, grief and anger.
