  3. Arnold M. "Arnie" Weidner, 81, Berlin

    Arnold M. “Arnie” Weidner, 81, Berlin, was called from this earth by his heavenly father on May 21, 2013, at Somerset In-Touch Hospice. Born Oct. 31, 1931, in Allegheny Township, he is the son of the late Fred and Amelia (Woida) Weidner. Preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Sloan; sister Rose Wasylczak, brothers-in-law John Sloan and Rev. Earnest Hale. Survived by brother Ed (Mary) and family, Philadelphia; stepson Gene (Valary) Riel, Ohio; niece Spring Rose (Dennis) McManus, Philadelphia; sister-in-law Gladys (Rodger) Hale, W. Va.; brother-in-law Rev. Clay (Gerry) Sloan, Florida; niece Ruth Ann (James) Moss, Florida; niece Linda (Joe) Meyer, Ohio; other nieces and nephews; and special friends Connie, Leah, and Cindy. A 1949 graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School where he was active in FFA as a chapter president, county reporter, and state secretary. A Korean War veteran, he served with the United Nations forces for 16 months during and after the war, he also served as a military policeman. Among his medals were the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon, the United Nations Medal, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star, and Korean Occupation Medal. He was discharged as a corporal. After the war, he took a job with General Expressway of Chicago as a tractor-trailer driver until the company relocated. Arnie was a lifelong dairy, beef and grain farmer, a family business in Allegheny Township. He was a life member of Berlin VFW Post 7295, where he served two terms as commander and was also selected as all state commander. Member of Berlin American Legion Post 445 where he served as assistant chaplain. He also served six years as a constable for Allegheny Township Arnie was also often seen at the Lions Clubs, churches, and schools giving speeches on the Korean War and the cause of the war. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Glen Savage, Rev. Paul Yanke officiating.  Interment Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, 630 Church Rd., Fairhope, PA 15538.  Graveside Military Honors provided by the Berlin Veterans Home.
