1. Pet of the Week

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, when shelter populations of kittens as well as adult cats tend to peak. The Orange County Humane Society is no exception, with about 35 felines currently in residence. Sweet little Alex, pictured here, is among a dozen kittens of varying ages and breeds. He is just 3 months old and, like most of his kennel mates, was found as a stray. Before adopting one of these lively animals, you will want to consider whether your home is kitten-friendly and you are prepared to provide the care needed. Many online resources are available to assist you in this process, including the ASCPA, Best Friends Animal Society and Petfinder. Adoption fees are discounted 25% throughout June for all kittens and adult cats. For more information, call (714) 536-8480 or visit http://www.ochumanesociety.com. Your donations of the following items are especially welcome: kitten nursing bottles, powdered kitten milk replacer, cat toys, and blankets and towels.

  3. Commentary: Park is no place for the elderly

Regarding the Huntington Beach Senior Center and the ongoing discussions about whether to build new or renovate the current facility, I would like to add my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth. I've been a resident in H.B. since 1969 and have seen what...

  7. Pushing his experience

Bruce Brandt spends a lot of time around horses. And like some iconic horsemen — say, Clint Eastwood as the Man With No Name — he's on the quiet side.

  9. City Lights: Some toys have a real story

Oh, those traumatic memories of "Toy Story 3." For some reason, I've kept encountering playthings during my last couple of weeks covering Huntington Beach. First, there was the Course of the Force, a "Star Wars"-themed charity relay in which participants...

  23. In The Pipeline: A home for the holidays

Billy O'Connell knows how to get things done. Maybe it's the tough Irish accent, or the fact that for years he was an L.A. County sheriff. Whatever it is, when you talk to him, you understand he's a no-nonsense, take-charge sort of guy. So years ago, when...
