1. Arts Year in Review: Highlights on the cultural scene

With Nike departing the U.S. Open of Surfing, contentious City Council elections and those Mitt and Barack guys grabbing headlines, it was a busy year for news — and the arts proved to be no exception. We could try to order this into a conventional "top 10 stories" or some such thing, but since the arts are always playful and surprising, and sometimes impossible to classify, we'll approach our year-end wrapup the same way. Here were some of the highlights on the cultural scene in 2012:

  21. Underwood Makes Wish Come True For Teen With Tumor

Carrie Underwood made a very special teenager’s dreams come true. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hayley Gort had the privilege of flying to Jacksonville, Fla., with friends and family to meet the popular country singer in person. Gort definitely earned the opportunity to have her dreams come true. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor on her pituitary gland, the 18-year-old Grand Rapids, Mich. native had to undergo several chemotherapy and radiation treatments. “The chemo was way worse than the radiation. Those two months weren’t very fun,” Haley Gort told Mlive. “I had to sit in a chair for three hours for three days straight hooked up with an IV and feeling like crap. Then for about a week after, I was nauseous and vomiting. I couldn’t keep food down and I lost my hair.” After two years of treatment, Gort was finally healthy enough to hop on an airplane with a group of her loved ones and fly to Florida to have her dreams come true. Make-A-Wish provided Gort and her cohort with a free flight and hotel, and the ‘Good Girl’ hitmaker donated backstage passes to her show. “I wouldn’t pick anyone else,” Haley Gort said Saturday, April 20, from her hotel room. “I really wanted to meet her.” Later that night, Gort finally got her chance. Underwood took time to pose for photos with the 18-year-old and her friends and family. “Best night of my life,” Gort tweeted that night. “I will never forget it! @CarrieUnderwood you don’t know how much that meant to me! #amazing.”
