  21. Richard Carl "Grumpy" Sohm

<span style="font-size: medium;">Richard "Grumpy" Carl Sohm was born July 7, 1938 in Danbury Iowa to Carl and Margarett (Harrigan) Sohm. He grew up on the family farm near Danbury. There his love for hunting and fishing began beside his father and three brothers. He graduated from St. Mary's High School May 24, 1953. He continued his education at Chicago Technical College for Mechanical Engineering graduating March 28, 1958. Shortly thereafter he met Bonnie Mohrhauser, he stood her up on their first date because he could not get a vehicle. The next time he called he wanted her to go jacklighting jack rabbits in an old pickup. It was such a crazy call she accepted. They were married at St. Mary's June 4, 1960, their union produced seven children. He worked in various positions through his career, spending the last twenty plus years at Homestake Gold Mine. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, true crime shows, Brave's baseball, grandbabies, and storytelling. One of his favorite things to tell us was that "the mind was the first thing to go and I can't remember what the second was". He passed at home, with his loving wife, after a long battle with COPD; his family will dearly miss him. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, brothers, Marshall (MaryAnn) Sohm of Danbury IA and John (Margaret) Sohm of Nashotah WI, children; Dawn (Terry) Newton of Philips WI, Paula (Bob) Roberts of Belle Foursche SD, Karla Sohm of Sioux City IA, Kimberly (Wayne) Michaels of Sturgis SD, Micheal (Melaney) Sohm of Sioux Falls SD, Charlene (Edward) Rodriguez of Rapid City SD and Jody (Donny) Weiand of Custer SD, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
