1. Natural Perspectives: Prepare for three days on your own in emergency

While Vic was on a pelagic trip with Sea and Sage Audubon on Saturday, I attended a three-hour disaster preparedness seminar put on by Huntington Beach. I learned so many important things that it is impossible to put them all into one column.

3. Natural Perspectives: Grandson added to already amazing brood

Vic and I are pleased to announce a new addition to our family — a baby grandson. After five precious granddaughters, we're thrilled to have a grandson, especially since we are pretty sure that he will be our last grandchild. Robert Michael...

5. Greer's OC: Claw your way toward Crab Tuesdays

Experiencing a culinary delicacy doesn't get much better than Crab Tuesdays at AnQi Gourmet Bistro & Noodle Bar at South Coast Plaza. It's a rare weekly foodie event hosted by celebrity Chef Helene An, the matriarch and executive chef of all An Family...

7. In The Pipeline: The call of 'great blue beyond' beckons

As I included in my column the last two weeks, my son and I were in the Arctic.
As I included in my column the last two weeks, my son and I were in the Arctic. Having just returned home, I thought I'd share a bit of our trip, which was even more spectacular than we'd imagined. As you may remember, I traveled with Quark...

9. Natural Perspectives: Current situation more like 'global weirding'

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center's "State of the Climate: Global Analysis for Annual 2010" makes for some pretty sobering reading. Vic and I waded through the nine-page document over the hot Fourth of July weekend.

11. Natural Perspectives: Mea culpa for last column

I made a goof in my last column about the Bolsa Chica Land Trust's plan for the mesa. The error is mine, not Vic's. I said the Land Trust was going to excavate no deeper than 8 feet to bury its 2,825-gallon water tanks in the ground. Actually, the tanks will not be buried. They will be above ground, with three or four tanks at each of the four proposed Terra-Farms on the mesa.

13. Community Commentary: Columnists are wrong again about mesa plan

Last week, we told you how excited we were about the CPR (Community Promoted Restoration) for the Mesa, a restoration project for the Bolsa Chica mesa. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust, in cooperation with the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), developed this...

15. Mailbag: Egypt should heed lessons of Iran

I pray with Mona Shadia ("Hoping for freedom in 'my' Egypt," Feb. 3) that Egyptian people will get freedoms that have been denied to them. However, I also would like to caution Egyptian protesters about the probability of a new regime that could be more...

17. Community Commentary: Columnists have mesa plans all wrong

Earlier this year, when we saw the plans for the restoration of the lower bench of the Bolsa Chica Mesa, we were thrilled. After all that has been achieved at Bolsa Chica, "CPR (Community Promoted Restoration) for the Mesa" is the next step in...

19. Natural Perspectives: Land Trust's composting plan is no good

Editor's note: This removes the paragraph regarding the water tanks, which will be above ground, not in pits that were to be no larger than 8 feet deep.

21. Natural Perspectives: More like a 'heart attack for the mesa'

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust has prepared a restoration plan for a 118-acre portion of the Bolsa Chica mesa, most of which is currently fenced. The area includes Warner Pond and the former Bolsa Chica Gun Club site, both of which are environmentally...

23. Natural Perspectives: Getting to the bottom of drained wetland

A new freshwater wetland formed at Bolsa Chica, but someone drained it. That's right, someone drained a wetland at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Vic cautioned me to handle this issue with a cool and level head, but it chapped my hide to think that...
