5. Lyric's passion must extend to musical theater

In 2008, New York's Lincoln Center revived a Broadway warhorse: "South Pacific." At the beginning of the overture in the Vivian Beaumont Theater, the lip of Michael Yeargan's setting, which had the outline of a tropical island, began to move backward, as waves ebb upon a shore. As it receded, hordes of musicians were revealed, all playing the glorious music of Richard Rodgers. You could see tears in people's eyes. As the Russian formalists used to put it, the familiar was made strange, and the strange made intensely familiar.

9. Critic's Pick: 'The Sound of Music,' 'Psycho,' 'Mommie Dearest'

No matter whether your mother's taste — or your memory of her, for that matter — is sweet or sour, the American Cinematheque has Mother's Day programming to suit the occasion. If your mom likes things sweet, the Cinematheque's Aero Theatre in Santa Monica features a 5 p.m. screening of "The Sound of Music," with Julie Andrews and all those Von Trapp children singing their little hearts out. On the other hand, if your mom enjoys the dark end of the street, the Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood features the hair-frying 7:30 p.m. double bill of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the Joan Crawford biopic "Mommie Dearest," starring Faye Dunaway as the parentally challenged star. It's nice to have a choice, my mother would say, and she'd be right.

13. Underwood Praises Julie Andrews

Carrie Underwood has found a new way to spread music to fans, as she will be playing the iconic “Maria Von Trapp,” in NBC’s live broadcast of The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews played the legendary role in the famous 1965 film, and she is someone Carrie idolized at a young age. Carrie has yet to meet Julie, but she hopes to take what she has learned from her, and create her own vision of the character. “At some point I would love to meet her, just because she is someone I grew up watching and listening too. But, no one can touch her, I am not her and I will never be her. She holds such an iconic place in so many people’s hearts. I think it is really important for me to read the script, watch other musicals and kind of get into the whole musical space verses the movie space – which she was so wonderful in.” In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Julie says she will “endorse everything” about The Sound of Music broadcast, and “would love to know Carrie!” The three-hour live remake of The Sound of Music will air in late 2013 on NBC.

The TV Guy - Orlando Sentinel
“‘You make Machiavelli look like Mother Teresa.” The speaker was a paramour of J.R. Ewing, the time was 1996, and the backdrop was a shoddy TV movie called “Dallas: J.R. Returns.” Of course, J.R. never really left. He looms...
