  3. On Theatre: 'Philadelphia' dated, but good performances abound

For the final production of its 50th anniversary season, the Westminster Community Theater has chosen a play whose vintage makes WCT look like the new kid on the block. Philip Barry's "The Philadelphia Story" first appeared during that brief period of...

  5. On Theater: Live radio play at Huntington Beach Playhouse

Editor's note: This corrects the headline. The play is at Huntington Beach Playhouse, not Golden West College. Remember radio? Some of you must. It entertained you just like television does today, but it required the listener to use his or her...

  13. Rand Paul's stunt misses the point

If you took Sen. Rand Paul duck hunting, he'd probably shoot the decoy. That's the impression the first-term Kentucky Republican gave when he took the floor of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday for a 13-hour rambling real-life imitation of Jimmy Stewart's...

  17. Film Review: 'Admission' not wonderful, not awful

"Admission" is a nice movie. You have no idea how depressing it is for a critic to drag out what may be the blandest word in the English language. But it fits. "Admission" is a bowl of oatmeal — instant oatmeal — with nothing added; not sugar, not fruit, maybe a tiny bit of butter. Don't get me wrong: I like oatmeal, even plain. Neither it nor “Admission” is awful, but I can't imagine it getting anyone genuinely stoked.

  23. Fixing the filibuster

The filibuster is back in the news, thanks to Sen. Rand Paul's nearly 13-hour talkathon on U.S. drone policy last week. Putting aside the merits of Mr. Paul's national security views, his feat of endurance was in the best tradition of the Senate. He...
