  1. City Lights: Turning on new 'Lights'

This column has moved but will not require a new name. "City Lights" — I originally thought of that title as a play on the city editor position. Now, as I move into the features editor spot, I'm reminded of from where else the inspiration came....

  5. An accidental author

The poet Allen Ginsberg, who liked to work quickly, had an oft-stated theory about writing: "First thought, best thought." Michael Henderson, a Huntington Beach resident who found himself out of a job early this year, never aspired to be the next...

  7. Happy scandalous anniversary to Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl'

On this date, March 25, in 1957, Allen Ginsberg helped make literary history. That's because 520 copies of his poem "Howl" were seized by U.S. Customs agents on charges of obscenity. Ginsberg and his publisher, City Lights, would fight those charges -- and win.

  9. Kerouac opus 'On the Road' hits just enough beats ★★★

An eternal fountain of adolescence, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" went through many permutations between its point of origin, 1948, and its point of notorious, divisive publication, 1957. The best description of it came from Kerouac himself, in a journal entry written after his first cross-country road trip in 1948. The book he had in mind, he said, was about "two guys hitchhiking to California in search of something they don't really find, and losing themselves on the road, and coming all the way back hopeful of something else." There's a simple beauty to that. The question is: How do you film an extended yearning?

  13. L.A. architecture takes the lead in Getty's new PST project

Much of the time Los Angeles can feel like a huge, messy jigsaw puzzle, with pieces left out — a city that evolved by accident. Parts of it don't work, parts of it seem newly broken, parts are truly luminous — but hidden — and they all seem to have nothing to do with each other.

  15. For the record

Lincoln MKZ: In the March 9 Business section, a review of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ said that Lincoln sold 213,000 fewer vehicles than "class-leading" Mercedes in 2012. In fact, BMW sold the most luxury passenger vehicles in the U.S. last year, about 200,000...

  17. Plotting out another great Story Week

It is a pleasurable thing to have drinks with Randy Albers and we have done so over the years at such saloons as, of course, the Billy Goat, as well as Stefani's 437, the Underground Wonder Bar and some joint in the South Loop whose name escapes me at the moment.

  19. Daniel Radcliffe's Out cover story reveals a few choice tidbits

Daniel Radcliffe's Out magazine cover story teaches us a couple of very important things. One, he seems like a really decent guy who gets along with just about everybody when he's on a movie set. Two, he's circumcised.  Radcliffe, who plays Allen...

  23. I yam what I yam -- but is it art?

One of the biggest problems in our politics is that people don't think for themselves. We let radio and television hosts, pundits and politicians tell us what to believe. And one of the biggest problems in our arts is that people don't enjoy for themselves. We let museum curators, gallery owners, critics and professors tell us what to feel.
