  3. Coming to terms with terror

Commenting on the horrific explosions in Boston, President Obama insisted Tuesday that "the American people refuse to be terrorized." Brave words, but also accurate ones. In the years since 9/11, residents of this country have acquiesced in an array of inconveniences and encumbrances, hoping they are contributing to their own protection but often suspecting that this or that precaution is either arbitrary or useless. But even as they alternate between stoicism and resentment, Americans have continued to travel, socialize and take part in communal celebrations such as the Boston Marathon and New Year's Eve festivities in Times Square.

I don't know how to answer Michael Hanchard's questions, but I understand why he asks them: "If we were a middle-aged white couple, rather than a black couple, and if the group of people who surrounded us were black or Latino, rather than white, would the attackers have been treated with impunity?

  13. Power conferences in college football gain even more strength

College football commissioners were going to end their three-day unity conference in Pasadena with a round of "Kumbaya" at the hotel's valet carport. That was before the consulting firm that dreamed up "College Football Playoff" suggested something more generic from "The White Album."
