  1. Hanukkah recipe: Fresh herb salad with seeds

The Hanukkah menu revolves around oil -- it's the symbol of the holiday. But that means when you're planning a menu you need to think of a dish that will cut through some of that richness. Something like this light salad of bitter herbs and toasted seeds from cookbook writer Phyllis Glazer.

  17. On the Town: Chef puts gourmet meals into practice, Gingerbread Boutique in Arcadia

Pasadena residents in the know are flocking to Glendale for Recess. But it's not just a break they want. Pasadenans want gourmet food at non-gourmet prices. For three Thursday evenings Recess Executive Chef-Owner Sevan Abdessian is offering just that. The chef was the first Los Angeles resident to win a spot on the Food Network's popular New York-based “Chopped” show. Abdessian is “practicing” on residents who come locally and from other parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Thursday night customers will spend $30 for a delicious practice dinner including appetizer, entrée and dessert. So far Chef Abdessian has had plenty of practice. Four Thursday dinners have already taken place.

  21. Christmas TV specials overflow this year on Hallmark, ABC and more

As a child of the San Fernando Valley, I knew the yuletide as a time of frost-free mornings when I could not see my breath. Turning down my collar against the warm, I would trudge sludgeless streets past yards absent of snowmen, where green and even flowering hedges hid no foes waiting to pelt me with snowballs, on my way to school, where we would sing songs of sleigh rides and mistletoe and holly. Of Frosty. Rudolph. Santa.
