1. It's always a party with Danny Brown in the house

For Danny Brown, rap is a party, and everyone's invited. During the Detroit artist's sold-out show Thursday night at Bottom Lounge, this point was made repeatedly by the performer himself. But more importantly it was driven home by an energy and presentation that went well beyond merely paying lip service to the idea that a hip-hop show is supposed to be celebratory. Repeatedly greeting the audience with his tongue stuck out, flashing devil horns with his hands, the wild-haired Brown served as enthusiastic ringleader for a lively, moshing crowd throughout the night.

In "The Simple Art of Murder," Raymond Chandler wrote that the world inhabited by good crime fiction "is not a fragrant world, but it is the world you live in, and certain writers with tough minds and a cool spirit of detachment can make very interesting and even amusing patterns out of it."

  19. Netflix tries to build on in-house brand with 'Hemlock Grove'

    — The fireflies in this coastal Ontario town had begun to materialize over the estate's sprawling lawn. Inside a macabre-looking residence, the actors Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard slipped through elegant rooms and chilly corridors, a bone-creepy tableau that might be described as "The Addams Family" meets Guillermo del Toro. Her voice musical but no-nonsense, Janssen issued an order to Skarsgard; he responded by trying very hard to look aloof.
