    Metropolis was founded in 1839 on the banks of the Ohio River, about as far south as you can go in Illinois without stepping into Kentucky. Its settlers were enthusiastic: They assumed the waterfront real estate would result in a metropolis, hence the name. They were a bit off. Metropolis became a small city (population: 6,500), though in 1972 DC Comics proclaimed it the home of Superman, and the town found its identity.
