High School Roundup: Oilers score key win

The Huntington Beach High girls’ volleyball team completed a Sunset League swept of Newport Harbor Tuesday by defeating the host Sailors, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21.

Kendra Koelsch had 19 kills, Ally Forsberg, Sam Brennan, Cheyenne Rankin, and Katie Lespier each had nine kills, Gianna Guinasso had 19 digs, and Rachel Hall 38 assists for Huntington which kept a piece of first place in the league standings.

Huntington, which improved to 21-5 overall, is 5-1 in league and tied for first with Los Alamitos.

The Oilers previously defeated the Sailors in an Oct. 3 league opener.

“It was a great team effort,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “Rachel [Hall] ran a balanced offense, and we had key contributions from everyone.

“It’s always good to get a win at Newport Harbor. Danny Glenn is a great coach, and he always has his teams ready to play. I hope we can build on this win, and carry it over to the rest of the season.”

In a previous league match Friday, Koelsch had 10 kills, Rankin, Forsberg and Lespier nine kills apiece, and Guinasso 10 digs, as Huntington swept visiting Edison, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19.

In a key, Oct. 16 match at Los Alamitos, the Oilers fell to the Griffins, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section 1-AA Division, 24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 18-25. Rankin had 16 kills and three blocks, and Koelsch had 13 kills.

In other Sunset League matches Tuesday, Edison swept Marina, and Fountain Valley was swept by Los Alamitos.

Edison scored a 25-10, 25-6, 25-6 win over visiting Marina. Outside hitter Tatum Holdaway had 10 kills and setter Kerry Doran had 25 assists for the Chargers who improved to 2-4 in league.

Senior opposite Marissa Stubbs had seven kills for the Vikings (0-6 in league).

“We struggled in serve-receive and were never able to effectively run an offense,” Marina Coach Rob Kijewski said.

In Sunset League matches at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Edison plays host to Newport Harbor, Huntington is at home against Fountain Valley, and Marina travels to Los Alamitos.

In recent Golden West League action, Ocean View split recent matches with Segerstrom and Westminster.

In an Oct. 16 match at Segerstrom, the host Jaguars posted a 25-20, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20 win over the Seahawks, who are ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 4-AA. Leota Conye had nine kills, Treasure Robinson had six kills, and Tobi Salzman 13 digs in the loss.

Ocean View came back Friday to win, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, at rival Westminster. Jaty Newman had 22 kills, Salzman 34 digs, Juliana Schat 28 digs, and Brennan Cutrell 35 assists.

“Westminster always plays us tough in their gym,” Ocean View Coach Seth Cutrell said. “We need to continue to improve by taking care of the ball and getting us better opportunities to score.”

Ocean View, which entered the week 4-1 in league play, plays a 4:30 p.m. league match Friday at Loara.

Boys’ Water Polo

Huntington Beach improved to 2-0 in Sunset League play Oct. 16 by defeating Fountain Valley, 5-3, at Newport Harbor High. Alex Wolf had 12 saves and three steals, and scored a length-of-the-pool goal from the Huntington goalie cage for the Oilers who were 0 for 6 on power plays.

The Oilers are ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

“I was actually happy with the game,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “It’s good to not peak right now during the season and survive games like that, and to move on to the next one.”

Huntington took on Dana Hills Saturday and dropped a 10-8 nonleague match to the Dolphins who are ranked sixth in Division 1.

“That is a senior laden team with great athletes,” Anderson said of the Dolphins. “Our young team was competing with some of the best talent Orange County and CIF have to offer. I was pleased with our performance. We just had too many turnovers in the game.”

Quinten Osborne had two goals and two drawn exclusions, and Dillon Morely had two goals for Huntington which was 15-6 overall entering the week.

Edison, tied with Servite at No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, dropped a 14-9 Sunset League match to third-ranked Newport Harbor on Oct. 16. The Chargers (0-2 league) trailed, 8-7, at the half and had three opportunities in the fourth quarter to pull within a goal of the Sailors, but couldn’t.

“We came into the game with a solid game plan, and until late in the game, we executed it nearly perfect,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Our boys played hard and competed every possession, and as a coach, what more could you ask for?”

The loss dropped the Oilers to 0-2 in league.

On Saturday, Edison traveled to La Jolla for a nonleague doubleheader against La Jolla and Scripps Ranch. The Chargers took a 6-4 halftime lead on La Jolla, the second-ranked team in the CIF San Diego Section, moved out to a four-goal lead, went to its bench in the fourth quarter, and ended up with an 11-10 victory.

Also playing its reserves for much of the match, Edison took a 14-8 win from Scripps Ranch to improve to 18-4 overall.

“I schedule the La Jolla game down south for several reasons, mainly, because it is on the road, in a totally different area than we are used to traveling to, and always has referees we don’t know,” Riley said. “It’s very similar to CIF where many times over the years we have had to travel into L.A., or Long Beach. It prepares us mentally.

“In addition, we get a chance to play one of the top teams in San Diego.”

In another Sunset League game played Oct. 16, Marina fell, 18-6, to Los Alamitos.

In a Sunset League triple-header Wednesday at Newport Harbor High, Marina faces Newport Harbor at 5 p.m., Huntington battles Los Alamitos at 6:05 p.m., and Edison takes on Fountain Valley at 7:10 p.m.
