High School Roundup: Chargers take solid fourth at Villa Park tourney

The Edison High girls’ water polo team won some key matches to reach the semifinal round of the Villa Park Tournament, and the Chargers ended up with a fourth-place finish at the conclusion of the three-day event Saturday.

Edison (5-6), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, started the tournament Dec. 12 and routed Bonita, 22-6. Sabrina Jensen scored six goals and Laurin Semmelroth had four goals in the win. In their second game, the Chargers used a game-winning goal in overtime by Delaney Cleveland, her fifth score of the match, to knock off fifth-ranked San Marcos, 12-11. Jensen added four goals and Josette Santos had 10 saves.

In the quarterfinals, Jensen, Natalie May and Julie Harrison each scored twice, and Santos had 12 saves, as Edison toppled La Jolla The Bishop’s, 6-2. The win put the Chargers in the semifinal round and up against Mater Dei, the second-ranked team in Division 2. Jensen and Cleveland both scored three goals but the Chargers fell, 14-8, to the Monarchs.

The third-place game pitted Edison against Sunset League rival Los Alamitos. Lyndsie Williams led the Chargers in scoring with three goals and Jensen and Cleveland both scored twice, but Los Al, No. 4 in Division 1, held on for a 10-8 win.

“These girls continue to amaze me,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said of his team. “They have bonded so well over this past month and are really playing together like a true team. They are reminded daily that greatness follows teams that are truly together and understand that the star is the team itself.

“We beat two very good teams in San Marcos and Bishops. While some were calling them upsets, the girls don’t feel they were.”

Edison is idle until it competes Jan. 3-4 at the Holiday Cup hosted by Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar.

Girls’ Soccer

Host Huntington Beach won its first three games at the All Turf Tournament to reach the girls’ championship game, where the Oilers’ had their tourney title hopes end following a 2-1 loss to Long Beach Millikan Saturday.

The Oilers advanced to the title game following wins against La Salle (No. 8, Division 3, 2-1), Hoover (9-0) and Monrovia (2-1).

Fountain Valley finished 2-2 at the tournament. The Barons overpowered Hoover (10-1), dropped consecutive, 1-0 matches to Monrovia and La Salle, but ended the tournament Saturday with a 2-0 win over La Salle.

Boys’ Soccer

Huntington reached the title game of its All Turf Tournament Saturday where the Oilers fell, 3-0, to Long Beach Cabrillo.

After playing Chino Hills to a 1-1 tie in a tournament opener Dec. 12, Huntington blanked Monrovia, 1-0, then defeated Sultana, 3-1, to move on to the final.

Wrestling

Corona Centennial took top team honors with a first-place finish Saturday at the Beach Bash tournament at Edison High.

The Huskies, who entered the 2013-14 season with a No. 3 CIF Southern Section Division 1 preseason ranking, compiled 168.5 team points and edged second-place Arroyo (No. 5, Division 5, 164 points) for the overall title.

Host Edison finished with 129 points and placed fifth.

Individually, Edison had six wrestlers place and one finalist, Joey Bush (132 pounds). Other placements for the Chargers included Tommy Balding (138, fifth), Matt Arnold (152, third), Riley Stewart (160, fifth), Adam Bernacci (seventh, 195), Stephen Broadus (eighth, 195), and Brayden Wilson (220, fourth).

Huntington Beach had two placements in Alex Christie (152, fourth) and Christian Correa (170, third).
