Briefs: Anderson on men’s pipeline staff

Huntington Beach High boys’ water polo head coach Brian Anderson has been named to the coaching staff for USA Water Polo’s USA Men’s National Pipeline teams. The staff, which will work with the USA Junior, Youth and Cadet level teams, was announced Dec. 5.

Anderson was named as assistant coach for the Men’s Cadet National Team. Bryan Lynton, head coach of the boys’ and girls’ water polo programs at Murietta Valley High, returns as head coach of the team.

Anderson, a coach and co-founder of Huntington Beach-based Vanguard Water Polo Club, served as head coach of the Olympic Development Program’s 12th/11th grade boys’ team for the SoPac Zone.

He has been coaching in the ODP for four years.

“It’s truly an honor to be recognized as a coach that USA water polo, as an organization, feels can help athletes reach their potential as possible Olympians,” Anderson said. “It is very humbling and exciting to work with some of the best athletes and coaches in the world, and to represent Huntington Beach as a city.”

With the USA Men’s Cadet Team, Anderson his responsibilities including selecting athletes nationwide to train and compete with the team next summer .

In other water polo news, local athletes Danielle Warde (Edison High, UC Irvine) and Alys Williams (Edison High, UCLA), have been named to the 16-player USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team roster for the 2013 Holiday Cup. The tournament began Wednesday and continues through Sunday at Foothill High.

Six international women’s water polo teams will compete at the Holiday Cup. Teams vying for the tournament title are the USA, Canada, Australia, Greece, the Netherlands, and Russia.

Warde and Williams last month had been named to the USA Women’s Senior National Team roster for the Canada Cup. Team USA, coached by Adam Krikorian, won the tournament title by defeating Australia in a shootout, 12-10, Sunday at Quebec, Canada.

Holiday Cup tickets will be available at the door prior to each game with full tournament passes also available. As part of the holiday spirit, spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned items to donate. For each canned item donated, attendees receive $1 off ($3 maximum) off per person per day on ticket purchase. All canned items collected will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Thursday schedule: 6 p.m.: Greece vs. the Netherlands; 7:15 p.m.: Australia vs. Russia; 8:30 p.m.: USA vs. Canada.

Friday: 6 p.m.: Canada vs. Greece; 7:15 p.m.: Australia vs. the Netherlands; 8:30 p.m.: USA vs. Russia.

Saturday: 6 p.m.: The Netherlands vs. Canada; 7:15 p.m.: Russia vs. Greece; 8:30 p.m.: USA vs. Australia.

Sunday: 9 a.m.: Russia vs. the Netherlands; 10:15 p.m.: Canada vs. Australia; 11:30 a.m.: USA vs. Greece.

Running event is Sunday

Edison High will stage Resolution Run, a 5K and kids’ fun run Sunday at Fairview Park (2501 Placentia Avenue) in Costa Mesa.

Proceeds from the event support local youth at Edison High and The McKenna Claire Foundation, a Huntington Beach 501©3 charitable foundation supporting pediatric brain cancer research. The foundation started in honor of local 7-year old McKenna Claire who was diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain stem tumor (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) and passed away in July 2011. Its mission is to speed research and understanding of DIPG tumors and future treatments at Monje Lab at Stanford University.

The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. with participant fees set at $40 per adult and $30 per students. The cost is $20 for the Kids Fun Run which starts at 9 a.m. To register as a participant or potential sponsor, visit https://www.resolutionrun.info. Cruise fundraiser

Huntington Beach High Athletics will stage the Hall of Fame Yacht Cruise Fundraiser event from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 19 in Newport Beach (2901 Pacific Coast Highway).

Ticket prices are $80 single ticket, and $150 per couple which includes silent auction items. Ticket prices also include a viewing of the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade, a 90-minute Newport Harbor Yacht Cruise, live DJ and dancing, hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner stations, and an entry into a raffle drawing. Three cash bars also are available.

All proceeds from the event fund the Huntington Beach Hall of Fame construction project.
