Briefs: Patterson earns AVP awards

Casey Patterson, a resident of Huntington Beach, received two awards from the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour which announced its year-end award winners for its 2013 season Tuesday.

Patterson was named Best Offensive Player for the men’s side, and he and partner Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) were named Male Team of the Year.

Patterson averaged 8.05 kills per match (596 kills, 74 matches). He and Gibb, a newly-formed team this year, won four consecutive tour events in Cincinnati, Atlantic City, St. Petersburg, and Santa Barbara.

The year-end honors were awarded based on statistics, player votes and points earned during the 2013 tour schedule.

Edison seeks coach

Edison High has started a CIF team for the sport of boys’ lacrosse and is currently searching for a head coach, Edison Athletic Director Rich Boyce said.

Cruise fundraiser

Huntington Beach High Athletics will stage the Hall of Fame Yacht Cruise Fundraiser event from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 19 in Newport Beach (2901 Pacific Coast Highway).

Ticket prices are $80 single ticket, and $150 per couple which includes silent auction items. Ticket prices also include a viewing of the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade, a 90-minute Newport Harbor Yacht Cruise, live DJ and dancing, hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner stations, and an entry into a raffle drawing. Three cash bars also are available.

All proceeds from the event fund the Huntington Beach Hall of Fame construction project.

A day of running

Edison High will stage Resolution Run, a 5K and kids’ fun run, Dec. 15. The first-year event will be held at Fairview Park (2501 Placentia Avenue) in Costa Mesa.

Proceeds from the event support local youth at Edison High and The McKenna Claire Foundation, a Huntington Beach 501©3 charitable foundation supporting pediatric brain cancer research. The foundation started in honor of local 7-year old McKenna Claire who was diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain stem tumor (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) and passed away in July 2011. Its mission is to speed research and understanding of DIPG tumors and future treatments at Monje Lab at Stanford University.

The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. with participant fees set at $40 per adult and $30 per students. The cost is $20 for the Kids Fun Run which starts at 9 a.m. To register as a participant or potential sponsor, visit https://www.resolutionrun.info.
