Pascoe steps down as Marina football coach

After four years at the helm, Marina High football head coach George Pascoe has resigned from the position.

Pascoe told his team and football boosters of his resignation Tuesday.

The Vikings won nine games in four years under Pascoe, who said he will remain at the school as a teacher in the physical education department.

“It was a situation where I felt like somebody else should have the opportunity to help Marina turn the corner,” Pascoe said. “There are some good athletes in this program and we have a really good freshman class, and I want the program to continue on the upswing.”

Pascoe’s final Marina team went 1-9 and finished 0-5 in the Sunset League. The Vikings ended their season Friday with a 49-15 loss to league champion Edison.

Marina has gone a combined 8-31-1 in the last four years.

The Vikings haven’t won a Sunset League game since 2004, the year Pascoe joined the Marina football staff as an assistant coach.

Although it has been a tough road to cultivate in the competitive Sunset League, Pascoe said he enjoyed his time as head coach of the Vikings.

“What I take from the experience is all positive,” he said. “The relationships built here, are special. We have a really strong booster club and have raised a lot of money. I think the facilities have improved since four years ago, and we have a new weight room. Everything is top-notch. We just need to win a few games.”

Pascoe previously served on coaching staffs at Westminster (1981), twice at his alma mater, Fountain Valley (1976-78, ’78 team won CIF Big-Five Conference championship; 1982), and coached at Huntington Beach from 1983-95. His ’93 Huntington squad, which featured future NFL Hall of Fame receiver Tony Gonzalez, finished runner-up to the CIF Division II title.

He coached at Golden West College from 1998-2003, then joined the Marina staff in 2004. He took over as Vikings head coach in January 2010, replacing Dan Petrone, who went 6-24 in three seasons.

Pascoe also previously coached (1979-80) at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats played Pittsburg in the 1979 Fiesta Bowl, a 16-10 Pitt victory.

Pascoe played tight end at Fountain Valley, then went on to letter in football at both Golden West and the University of La Verne.

“The only regret is that we didn’t win any league games in these four years,” Pascoe said. “But, it wasn’t for a lack of effort. Our kids really battled and worked their tails off. When teams played Marina, they knew they were facing a team that never gave up. These kids gave it their all.

“I hope whoever they hire, creates some excitement around here.”
