JC Football: GWC wins Bell again

An impressive performance Saturday allowed Golden West College to win the Battle for the Bell for a fourth consecutive year. The Rustlers retained possession of the bell by rolling past rival Orange Coast College, 52-7, at OCC’s LeBard Stadium.

Freshman quarterback Chris d’Entremont (Fountain Valley High) accounted for four touchdowns and 218 all-purpose yards in the win as Golden West improved to 8-1 overall and ran their Southern Conference mark to 4-1.

The Rustlers took an early lead on a double-pass from d’Entremont to Luke Pastell (Los Alamitos High) who then connected with Nik Little (Mater Dei) on a 74-yard scoring play. Taking a 10-0 lead into the second quarter, d’Entremont scored on a one-yard sneak, and hit Little with a 21-yard touchdown pass.

A 31-yard rushing touchdown by Ryan Hunley (Bellflower High) just before halftime gave the Rustlers a commanding, 31-0 lead.

In the second half, d’Entremont scored on a nine-yard run and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Hall (St. John Bosco High). Hunley capped the scoring with an 80-yard TD run, and finished with 136 rushing yards.

The Golden West defense, one of the top defensive units in Southern California, recorded 10 sacks in the game led by DelRoy Steele (Jones High, Orlando, Fla.), who had two sacks. Anthony McNichols (Lakewood High), Kapena Olsen (Villa Park High) and Nate Simon (Lakewood High) each had an interception.

Orange Coast (3-6, 1-4) scored its only touchdown on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jon Newsom (Trabuco Hills High), who hit D.J. McFadden (Abington High, Philadelphia, Pa.) with 47 seconds remaining in the game.

Golden West is idle Saturday . The Rustlers play their final regular-season game Nov. 16 at Saddleback College.
