Youth Scene: HB Green Chargers on fire in win

The Huntington Beach Green Chargers came up with their best offensive performance of the Pop Warner Football season Saturday to add another victory to the win column.

Displaying a balanced attack, Huntington defeated the Santa Ana Red Monarchs, 36-18, to win its sixth game and remain undefeated.

The Green Chargers scored on their third play from scrimmage when quarterback Blake Penso hit receiver Jake Brooks for a 50-yard touchdown pass. The passing game was led by Penso, Brooks, Nicholas Upstill and running back Cameron Eden.

On the ground, the Green Chargers had more than 200 yards rushing. Tanner Nelson had two rushing touchdowns while Eden, Cameron Mase and Sammy Rovano led the way on the ground.

The Green Chargers were led up front by a strong performance from their offensive line. Chase Hoglund, Jake Kenehan, Nat Scott, Cody Campbell, Mateo Lopez and Trent Fletcher opened up big holes for the running game.

On defense, the Green Chargers registered three sacks and forced two turnovers.

Huntington travels Saturday to Corona to play a 3 p.m. nonleague game against East Valley Express.

Gold Chargers 28, Santa Ana 0: Mikey Walters returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to get Huntington rolling and on its way to a shutout win over the Monarchs on a windy Saturday.

The Gold Chargers (3-3 overall, 3-2 league) also received touchdown runs from Jaedon Davis and Clay Anthony in the first half which ended with Huntington on top, 22-0. Nathan Mazzotti closed out the scoring with a touchdown catch and run in the third quarter.

Huntington hosts the La Habra Lions at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Gold Chargers 28, Orange 0: A strong performance by its offensive line and a defense that came up with two interceptions, one returned for a score, and a fumble recovery, Huntington shut out the Chiefs to run its record to 5-1.

A strong offensive line which included Joey Valenta, Jerian Operana, Jackson Schnoor, Ivan Soto and Tyler Moses led the way as the Gold Chargers shut out their fifth-straight opponent. Behind their blocking up front, quarterback Braeden Boyles was able to pick up two first downs before firing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mike Welsh. Jackson Walters’ two-point conversion kick gave the Gold Chargers an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Defensively, Welsh started the second quarter with a fumble recovery, while John Chandler, Jake Brown and Shane Dzwilewski each racked up key sacks. Welsh also intercepted a pass late in the second quarter and ran it in for a 25-yard touchdown.

In the second half, Jack Kosick scored on a 20-yard run for a 20-0 lead. Evan Haithcock, who recently returned to the line-up after a leg injury, had his first carry of the season.

An interception by Dillon Blake set up Huntington’s final score, a 10-yard touchdown run by Walters who also added the two-point kick to make it 28-0.

The Gold Chargers travel Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against the Canyon Hills Redhawks.

Clinic Division

Huntington 12, Inglewood 6: The Oilers took their fifth-straight victory by defeating the Jets in a hard-fought game at Caroline Coleman Stadium in Inglewood.

Cade Carnival made a key play by recovering a punt for Huntington. Later, Nate Skorheim scored the game’s first touchdown on a quarterback keeper.

The Oilers, who led, 6-0, at the half, extended their advantage when Jonah Del Rosario returned the second-half kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

Inglewood came back to score on a 45-yard run to pull to within 12-6, and Huntington’s defensive line of Del Rosario, Andrew Aconona, Hudson Letterman, Blake Gilbert, Jonathan Brown, Jeffrey Lindquist, Riley Rosenkranz, Lyrik Fata, Aden Eckenwiler and Garrett Smith, withstood one final threat by the Jets.

With less than one minute remaining in the game, Rosenkranz, Brown and Lindquist teamed to strip the ball from a Jets receiver. Huntington made the recovery and ran out the clock.

The Oilers are home Saturday to face the Newport Mesa Seahawks at 11 a.m. at Huntington Beach High.

South Bay 14, Huntington 0: The Oilers, with only 11 players dressed for the game, forced three turnovers and hung with South Bay throughout the game.

Huntington mounted a scoring drive with two minutes left in the game but an interception ended the threat.
