Youth Scene: Junior Oilers earn fourth win

A dominant performance Saturday by the Huntington Beach Oilers paved the way to their fourth victory of the Junior All-American Football season.

The Oilers led the entire way against the Whittier Trojans Gold team at Huntington Beach High and registered a 52-6 win in a Clinic Division contest. Aden Eckenwiler started the scoring on a 25-yard touchdown run that got the Huntington crowd fired up. A strong offensive line of Joseph Vardaro, Halu Ikeda, Andrew Ancona, Riley Rosenkranz, and Nick Skorhiem, made it look easy for the Oilers. It paved the way for a big run by Jonah Del Rosario that put the ball at the Whittier 20 yard line, and set up a touchdown run on a quarterback keeper by Nate Skorheim.

Following the only touchdown scored by the Trojans, Lyrik Fata scored from 40 yards out for Huntington to complete the first-quarter scoring. Fata also scored on a 40-yard run in the second quarter.

Skorheim scored three touchdowns for the Oilers who won for the fourth time this season.

The Huntington defense was paced by Fata, Del Rosario, Blake Gilbert, Garrett Smith, Hudson Letterman, Jonathon Brown, Ethan Rumney and Jeffrey Lindquist.

Huntington travels Saturday to face the Inglewood Jets.

Los Angeles 13, Huntington 0: The Oilers, who had only 12 healthy players available for the game, forced two turnovers on defense and moved the ball with consistency on offense, but were defeated by Los Angeles.

Huntington 26, Tustin 0: The Green Chargers won their fifth-straight game of the season by handling the Black Cobras.

Huntington (5-0) scored three first-half touchdowns led by quarterback Blake Penso and running back Cameron Eden. Penso threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jake Brooks, and a 55-yard scoring pass to receiver Nicholas Upstill. Edison scored on a 75-yard run.

Running back Sammy Rovano scored the only touchdown of the season half on a 20-yard run.

The defense shut down Tustin and was led by Tanner Nelson, Dylan Kerrigan, Trent Fletcher, Jack Kenehan and Dakota Harris.

Huntington travels Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. game against the Santa Ana Red Monarchs at Santa Ana Field.

Huntington 24, Brea 0: The Gold Chargers, who haven’t given up any points in their past four games, rolled to a win over the Green Wildcats.

Mike Welsh scored Huntington’s first touchdown and Jackson Walters kicked the two-point conversion. In the second quarter, Dillon Blake returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown and Walters again added a two-point kick. The Gold Chargers led, 16-0, at the half.

Welsh and quarterback Braeden Boyles teamed on a 40-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Walters’ third, two-point kick pushed the lead to 24-0.

Huntington’s tenacious defense was led by Jake Brown, Nick Daniel and Ivan Soto.

The Gold Chargers (4-1) are on the road Saturday for a 4 p.m. game against the Orange Chiefs.

Huntington 31, North Long Beach 6: The Green Chargers overcame an early, 6-0 deficit, scored 31 unanswered points and pulled away in the second half to score a big win over the Panthers at Edison High.

Trailing 6-0, a defensive sack by Huntington’s Brayden Johnson gave the Green Chargers (3-1) possession just before halftime. It was enough time for a quick score as Caden Kendle took a handoff and ran for a 40-yard touchdown. Kendle then connected on the two-point conversion kick with 33 seconds left in the half to gave the Green Chargers the lead for good at 8-6.

The Green Chargers dominated the second half of play. Following a fumble recovery by Rex Campbell, Kendle had a 60-yard run before quarterback Ryan Rivituso scored on a 25-yard run. Kendle’s second conversion kick gave Huntington a 16-6 lead early in the third quarter.

Ryan Easterday scored on a two-yard keeper and Kendle again proved a two-point conversion kick to put the lead at 24-6. On Huntington’s next possession, a 25-yard run by Artis Coleman set up an eight-yard touchdown pass from Rivituso to Connor Provost. Jaxon Price caught a one-point conversion pass from Easterday for a 31-6 advantage.

Huntington’s defense turned in several big plays in the second half led by nose tackle Evan Gilbert, his brother, Bryce Gilbert (tackle for loss on fourth-down play), Jordan Ginnis and Joey Gentilella with one sack apiece, and Kade Ayres with an interception.
