Briefs: Rhoten, Spencer to be honored

Dottie Rhoten, a former Huntington Beach High soccer standout, and Marina Athletic Director Michelle Spencer will be among several honorees Monday at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section’s 10th annual Dr. Jim Staunton Champions for Character Awards Dinner in The Grand Ballroom on the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach.

Rhoten is now a freshman at Point Loma Nazarene.

As a way to recognize those athletes that can combine a fierce competitive nature with the Six Pillars of Character; trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship; the CIF Southern Section Ethics in Sports Committee created these awards. Athletes, coaches, administrators, officials schools and media members who demonstrate these qualities are honored at the luncheon and highlighted for their achievements.

Clinic coming

Ocean View High will hold the first of six free basketball clinics starting Monday at the school’s gymnasium.

The clinics will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. over the next six Mondays through Nov. 2. Registration will be taken at 6 p.m. each Monday night prior to the start of each clinic. A parent or guardian must be present at the time of registration.

Golden West edges Allan Hancock

Peter Marquez (Costa Mesa High), kicked a 52-yard field goal with two seconds to play Saturday to send Golden West College past host Allan Hancock College, 23-21, in a nonconference football game.

It was the third field goal of the game for the sophomore who previously connected from 37 and 36 yards out. His final kick wiped out a 21-20 lead that Hancock had taken with 1:15 left on a four-yard run by Anthony Maez.

Freshman quarterback Chris de’Entremont (Fountain Valley High) threw for 147 yards with a touchdown and interception, and sophomore running back Sam Wilson (Marina High) scored a rushing touchdown for the Rustlers.

Golden West, which improved to 3-0, starts its Orange Empire Conference schedule against Fullerton at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Yorba Linda High.

The Golden West women’s water polo team overwhelmed Cypress, 26-2, in their Orange Empire Conference opener, then routed both Citrus (28-5) and L.A. Valley (17-3) at the Citrus Tournament. The three wins put the Rustlers at 8-0 overall.

The men’s water polo team went 5-1 over the past week, their first loss coming against Long Beach, 6-3, in weekend tournament play at Cuesta College. The Rustlers were 7-1 heading into this week’s action.

The women’s volleyball team improved to 3-0 by sweeping past Santa Monica and Santa Barbara in nonleague match play.

Freshman forward James Funes (Kennedy High) scored from 30 yards out for the winning score as the men’s soccer team (3-4) edged El Camino, 1-0.

The women’s soccer team won its first two games in OEC play to run its overall record to 3-2-1. Freshman midfielder Angela Martinez (Moreno Valley High) scored a goal two minutes into the game as the Rustlers knocked off Santa Ana, 3-1. Sophomore goalie Olivia Bedard had five saves in a 3-0 shut out win at Fullerton.

Final AVP stop is Surf City

The final stop on the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be in Huntington Beach Huntington Beach Oct. 18-20.

The Huntington Beach Open is the seventh stop on the tour. The next AVP open tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday at Santa Barbara.
