Briefs: Waves hoops tryouts Sunday

The H.B. Waves Girls’ Basketball Club will hold a tryout for its 2013-14 season Sunday at the Huntington Beach High gymnasium. The tryout is for youngsters in the fifth and sixth grades and runs from 6 to 7 p.m.

Rustlers dominate Harbor

The Golden West College football team turned in a dominating performance Saturday in recording a 48-17 victory over Los Angeles Harbor at Orange Coast College.

Linebacker Anthony McNichols (Lakewood High) started the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown and sophomore Peter Marquez (Costa Mesa High) capped the scoring with his second field goal, a 43-yarder, of the game. Freshman quarterback Chris de’Entremont (Fountain Valley High) pass for a touchdown and ran for another, and sophomore running back Robert Cruz (Magnolia High) rushed for three scores as the Rustlers improved to 2-0.

Golden West travels to Santa Maria Saturday for a 4 p.m, kickoff at Allan Hancock College.

In other Golden West College sports action, the women’s water polo team went to 5-0 by winning two tournament games during weekend play at American River College in Sacramento. Sophomore center Kayla Crocco (Reno, NV.) scored three goals in a 15-1 win over American River, and freshman center Brigitta Games (Littleton, CO.) posted six goals in a 19-4 win against San Joaquin Delta College.

The women’s soccer team fell, 2-0, to College of the Canyons, and played El Camino to a scoreless tie.

The men’s soccer team was shutout, 1-0, by Cerritos.

AVP event coming

The final stop on the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be in Huntington Beach Huntington Beach Oct. 18-20.

The Huntington Beach Open is the seventh stop on the tour. The next AVP open tournament is Sept. 27-29 at Santa Barbara.

The St. Petersburg Open at St. Petersburg, Fla., was suspended Sunday due to stormy conditions. Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach) and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa), the No. 2-seeded team in the tournament, beat No. 3 seeds Theodore Brunner (Isla Vista)/Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara), 22-20, in the first set of Sunday’s men’s final before rain and heavy winds forced the second set to be suspended.

The conclusion of the men’s final will be played Sept. 26, prior to the start of the Santa Barbara Open.

The women’s final, between No. 1 seeds April Ross (Costa Mesa)/Jen Kessy (Laguna Beach) and No. 2 seeds Emily Day (Torrance)/Summer Ross (Carlsbad), was canceled Sunday.
