Briefs: Taglieri honored for play

Gina Taglieri, who prepped at Huntington Beach High and is now at junior at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., has been selected as the Empire 8 Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.

Taglieri, a midfielder, scored three goals for the Presidents, who opened their 2013 season last weekend. She scored twice and assisted another score Friday in a 5-3 victory over Kenyon. On Sunday, she scored late as the Presidents finished off Oberlin, 5-1.

During her first two years at Washington & Jefferson, an NCAA Division III school, Taglieri had scored only one goal in 35 game appearances. She now has three career assists.

AVP event coming next month

The final stop of the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be in Huntington Beach Oct. 19-20. The tournament will be played at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

The tour started Aug. 16 at Salt Lake City, Utah. Last weekend, it went to Cincinnati, Ohio which concluded Monday. The Cincinnati Open women’s title was won by the No. 14-seeded team of Emily Day and Summer Ross which turned back Kerri Walsh Jennings and Whitney Pavlik, 21-15, 2-11, in Monday’s final.

Walsh Jennings and Pavlik had won the Manhattan Beach Open the previous weekend.

The men’s title was won Monday by the No. 2 team of Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson who defeated No. 5-seed Nick Lucena/Theodore Brunner in the final.

The next AVP Tour stop, the fourth of seven, is the DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Invitational starting Friday in Atlantic City, N.J.

ASP event at Trestles

The 34 surfers on the World Championship Tour circuit, along with wild cards Mitch Crews and Dane Reynolds, will battle it out Sept. 15 at the 2013 Hurley Pro at San Onofre State Beach-Lower Trestles.

The contest is the only Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Tour event in North America.
