Green Chargers 12, Saddleback Valley 6
Huntington Beach scored the winning touchdown in the final 10 seconds to defeat a tough Cougars team in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Saddleback Valley returned 12 players from last year's team that played in the 2013 Orange Bowl. Huntington used a balanced offensive attack (76 rushing, 70 passing yards) combined with a hard-hitting and stingy defense to win the game.
The Green Chargers' offense was led by quarterback Elijah Brown, who scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and the tough running of Jayden Niumata, who scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Green Chargers' defense stopped the Cougars' offense much of the game, but the Cougars reached the end zone with less than three minutes to play to tie the score (6-6).
The Green Chargers' defense was led by Niumata, Kade Ayres, Troy Fletcher, Rex Campbell, Jacob Scott, Evan Gilbert and Phillip Overturf.
The Green Chargers' offensive line played a solid game and opened up running lanes for Niumata, Fletcher and Campbell, while protecting Brown, who completed passes to Ryan Rivituso, Luke Mulford and Ethan Ton.
Huntington returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday and hosts the Downey Mustangs (0-1) at Edison High.
