Briefs: HB lifeguards to compete

Huntington Beach lifeguards will test their beach skills once again Thursday at the Nautica United States Lifesaving Assn. National Lifeguard Championships at Manhattan Beach.

More than 1,000 lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards are expected to compete in team and individual ocean and beach course events. The Lifeguard National Championships run daily starting at 8 a.m. through Saturday.

The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Assn. has won the title 39 times in the 43-year history of the event including the last 26 national competitions.

The Junior Lifeguard National Championships were Wednesday.

“This is the granddaddy of all lifeguard competitions bringing the best of the best from across the country,” Ed Zebrowski, Competition Committee Chair for the USLA, said in a statement. “It’s a fun-filled three days of action with competition and sponsor booths at one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.”

At the 31st annual California Surf Life Saving Championships at the Newport Beach Pier last week, California State Lifeguard Assn., which includes several Huntington Beach state lifeguards on its team, won the Large (A) division and overall team titles. L.A. County Lifeguard Assn. finished second in both standings.

Huntington Beach Surf Lifesaving Assn. placed fifth in the Large (A) division and seventh in the overall division standings.

Soccer tournament in Huntington Beach

Strikers South Coast will put on the Strikers Cup 2013, a youth soccer tournament, Aug. 24-25 at field locations in Huntington Beach.

The Strikers Cup is a Cal South sanctioned Class 1 Tournament and is open to all United States Soccer Federation-affiliated teams divisions U9 through U19. USSF National Assn. Player passes also are excepted. Age groups are for the 2013-14 season.

Trophies will be given to teams that win division champions and individual medals will be presented to players on teams finishing in either first or second place.

The Huntington Beach Sports Complex is the host venue for the two-day event. High school field sites hosting games are Huntington Beach, Edison, Marina and Westminster. Games also will be played at other field sites in Huntington Beach.
