Briefs: Lifeguards compete this weekend

Ocean lifeguards from throughout the state will test their skills Friday and Saturday at the 31st annual California Surf Life Saving Championships and California Junior Lifeguard Championships at the south side of the Newport Beach Pier in Newport Beach. The Junior Lifeguard Regional is Friday and the California Lifeguards competition is Saturday.

Nearly 2,000 competitors ranging in age from 8 to 17 will come from nearly 30 agencies in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, San Diego, Long Beach, LA County, California State Parks, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. The event includes ocean swims, beach runs and rescue paddleboard races. Junior guards will compete in their age groups individually and on their respective teams.

The two-day event will be held at the south side of the Newport Beach Pier between 18th and 20th streets.

Soccer tournament in August

Strikers South Coast will put on the Strikers Cup 2013, a youth soccer tournament, Aug. 24-25 at field locations in Huntington Beach.

The Strikers Cup is a Cal South sanctioned Class 1 Tournament and is open to all United States Soccer Federation-affiliated teams divisions U9 through U19. USSF National Assn. Player passes also are excepted. Age groups are for the 2013-14 season.

Trophies will be given to teams that win division champions and individual medals will be presented to players on teams finishing in either first or second place.

The Huntington Beach Sports Complex is the host venue for the two-day event. High school field sites hosting games are Huntington Beach, Edison, Marina and Westminster. Games also will be played at other field sites in Huntington Beach.
