HB linemen excel in event

Saturday belonged to the Bellflower St. John Bosco Braves football team at the Huntington Beach Passing Tournament.

The Braves won all three competitions at the day-long event, winning the passing tournament, linemen competition, and a hot dog eating contest.

St. John Bosco defeated Trinity League rival Santa Margarita in the 7-on-7 passing final.

On July 13, St. John Bosco won the Battle at the Beach passing tournament at Edison. The Braves defeated another Trinity League rival, Mater Dei, in that championship game.

Host Huntington Beach went 1-3 in passing tournament games Saturday. The Oiler linemen took second behind St. John Bosco in the linemen competition, and the Oilers’ “B” linemen team finished fifth in the event.

“I was really pleased with the tournament and how it was run. It was a really great event,” Huntington Beach Coach Eric Lo said. “As for us, I was really pleased with how well our linemen did but in the passing tournament, obviously, we need to get better.”

The 12-team passing tournament was split into four, three-team pools. Huntington started pool play with a win against Aliso Niguel, but dropped its final pool-play game in the morning session to Corona. In the loss, receiver Maurice Barber caught four touchdown passes, all from quarterback Kai Ross.

The Oilers lost afternoon session games against El Toro and Saugus.

Huntington’s’ summer season ends Aug. 1. Lo said the Oilers open fall camp on Aug. 7. They begin a six-game home schedule for the 2013 season Aug. 30 at home against Bakersfield Christian.

Boys’ Basketball

Fountain Valley: The Barons concluded summer play last weekend at the Palm Spring tournament where they went 3-1. The three-day tournament ended Sunday.

Fountain Valley defeated Perris, Pomona and Palm Springs. Its loss was to Claremont.

“It was a good tournament for us,” Fountain Valley Coach Roger Holmes said. “We played some very athletic teams that were bigger and more experienced than we are and we did a great job of playing our game and pulling out some close ones.”

The Barons ended their summer season with a 16-4 record. They went 10-0 in summer league action at Bolsa Grande High.

“I am very happy with the progress that we have shown to this point,” Holmes aid. “We graduated 95% of our scoring and have only three returners, no starters, and have six sophomores playing on varsity. We gained some valuable experience, played some good teams and are figuring out where we are.

“We have a very long way to go to be competitive in the Sunset League, but the strides we have made so far have been positive.

Ocean View: The Seahawks closed out summer play Wednesday and defeated Woodbridge, 55-53, in overtime. Alex Merdjanian hit a shot at the buzzer at the end of regulation to force overtime, and JaJuan McMiller knocked down two free throws with less than two seconds left in overtime to give the Seahawks the victory.
