Marina overpowers Brazilian team

Marina High’s boys’ basketball team wrapped up play in Los Alamitos/Marina summer league play with a pair of games this week.

On Monday, Marina took on NBC International Tours, a team from Brazil, and won, 55-42, at Marina. The Vikings played their final summer game Wednesdayagainst Liberty Christian. The score from Wednesday’s game wasn’t available at press time.

Marina Coach Nick Racklin said that NBC Tours-Brazil is a “club-type team,” and learned that from his friend, Rhett Soliday, men’s basketball head basketball coach at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, that NBC Tours-Brazil was heading to California and Washington to play a series of games.

Sophomore Braden Meyers hit three, three-point shots and scored 13 points for the Vikings.

“It was fun playing them, a good experience for all,” Racklin said. “It was good for our guys to play against more physical and older players.”

Baseball

Ocean View took on host Costa Mesa in summer league play Wednesday and scored a 5-2 victory over the Mustangs at TeWinkle Park.

The Seahawks’ pitching quartet of Steven Cotton, Dustin Fisher, Mikey Giacone and Ramon Sepulveda turned in another strong performance. The four combined for 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Costa Mesa scored two unearned runs in the first inning to open up a 2-0 lead. Giacone led off the Ocean View third with a bunt base hit and went to third base on a throwing error. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Fisher and the Seahawks scored once more in the inning to tie the score at 2-2.

Sophomore Braydon Salzman broke the tie by hitting a key, two-out, two-RBI single in the fourth to give Ocean View a 4-2 edge.

“We were down early with two unearned runs,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “We tried a two-out, back door pick-off move to first with the bases loaded, and it got away from our first baseman. Although the two runs were unearned, that’s what summer is about. We need to try things, see who can do what, fine tune things that you may not be able to simulate in practice.

“I was happy how our pitchers kept us in it after that and gave the offense a chance to chip away. Costa Mesa was obviously missing players because of football and other reasons. That happens in the summer a lot, but you still have to do the basic things like throw strikes and put the ball in play, and both teams did a good job of that.”

Ocean View played its final summer game Wednesday hosting Estancia. The score wasn’t available at press time.
