OV too much for Breakers

Ocean View High parlayed strong pitching with a lively offense Monday to pick up another victory in its summer prep baseball season.

The Seahawks took the lead for good on Laguna Beach in the third inning and went on to take a 9-1 game from the visiting Breakers. The win put the Seahawks at 4-3 overall.

“I’m really happy how we have been pitching,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski. “It’s keeping us in every game and helping us be competitive. We are getting a lot of strikes, the defense is alert because of it, and we are making plays. The hitting comes and goes, and we need to execute better offensively, but our pitching and defense has been a plus so far this summer.”

Steven Cotton, who will be a junior in the fall, allowed one unearned run in two innings pitched. Dustin Fisher, a senior, struck out one in an inning’s work. Also taking turns on the mound were sophomore Braydon Salzman (two strikeouts), senior Ramon Sepulveda (four strikeouts) and junior Jett Volo (one strikeout).

Two key hits put Ocean View in the lead. Mikey Giacone hit an RBI single with two out in the third to put the Seahawks in front to stay. An RBI sacrifice by junior Gabe Ledezma preceded Giacone’s hit and had tied the score.

With two out in the fifth, sophomore Ben Myers broke the game open with a bases-loaded double that brought in two more runs.

Fountain Valley: The Barons ran their American Legion summer league record to 7-0 by defeating San Juan Hills, 8-3, Wednesday.

The program is hosting its first Baron Baseball Golf Tournament on Nov. 25 at SeaCliff Country Club. The cost per participant is $175. All proceeds will benefit the Barons baseball program.

Marina: Jake Maisono went two for three with a double and Steve Gingery threw two shutout innings, and the Vikings scored an 8-1 victory Monday over visiting Dana Hills in American Legion league play.

Boys’ Basketball

Edison: The Chargers went 3-1 and reached the finals of the George Yardley Tournament, which started Friday and wrapped Sunday at Newport Harbor High. They posted wins against San Clemente, Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo, and lost to El Toro in the final.

Fountain Valley: The Barons went 4-0 last weekend at the Concordia Tournament at Concordia University in Irvine. They registered wins over Claremont (83-73), Irvine (82-58), Corona del Mar (86-83, overtime) and San Bernardino Pacific (103-65).

“We played hard all weekend and shot the ball well,” Fountain Valley Coach Roger Holmes said. “We are extremely young, playing six sophomores, and these tournaments are going to help us improve and learn what it takes to play at a high level.”

Huntington Beach: The Oilers went 2-2 at the George Yardley Tournament at Newport Harbor High. They posted wins against West Torrance and Jurupa Valley, and lost to El Toro and Santa Margarita.

Huntington concludes its summer schedule with league games Monday against Liberty Christian and on Wednesday against Sunset League foe Los Alamitos.

Marina: The Vikings fell, 54-50, to visiting Foothill Monday in a league game. They play host to a team from Brazil Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Marina.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors concluded their summer schedule on Sunday at the George Yardley Tournament at Newport Harbor High.

BC edged Corona del Mar (55-54), took a two-point halftime lead on Mission Viejo, but lost to the Diablos (64-54), held a one-point halftime edge on Santa Margarita, but ended up losing to the Eagles (72-58), and, missing two players and head coach Jon Bahnsen in their final game, lost, 55-52, to Jurupa Valley in a game that was decided in the final 30 seconds.

Point guard Brandon Bryson led the Warriors in assists and steals over the weekend and also controlled tempo, Bahnsen said. Shooting guard Caleb Keller led BC in scoring at the tournament and posted 22 points against Mission Viejo. Power forward Guy Demazeliere led the team in rebounding in the four games.

“Considering the quality of opponents in the tournament, we played very well,” Bahnsen said. “We competed well all weekend and gave great effort. To end the summer with this type of tournament will prepare us well to defend our league title as we go for a sixth straight Academy League championship next season.”

Ocean View: The Seahawks went 3-1 in weekend action at the Concordia Tournament, following up a loss to Riverside Poly with consecutive wins over Clovis, Santa Fe Christian and Clovis East. Coach Tim Walsh said that Dillon Reise and JaJuan McMiller carried the Seahawks on offense while the overall play of Alex Merdjanian, Evan Bunin and Jelani Jackson, “was solid.”

“Merdjanian really led the way for our defense,” Walsh said.

Ocean View on Monday knocked off Liberty Christian, 65-23.

Walsh said Friday point guard Kendall Small will transfer from Ocean View. Walsh said it is his understanding that Small will transfer to Lakewood Mayfair High.

Small played varsity basketball and started at Ocean View in both his freshman and sophomore years. The junior-to-be is a two-time All-Golden West League player and was the league’s Most Valuable Player this year. As a sophomore, he averaged 21 points, six rebounds and three assists per game.

He went on to be named to the 2013 All CIF Southern Section 3A Division Boys’ Basketball Team.
