Briefs: Vergara wins Santa Ana Jr. Open

Michael Vergara, 12, of Huntington Beach, swept his way to both the singles and doubles titles last weekend at the eighth annual Santa Ana Junior Open Championships.

Vergara won both the boys’ 12 singles and boys’ 12 doubles titles. He is ranked 45th in the state, and 244th nationally, in the boys’ 12 tennis rankings.

Vergara will compete at the United States Tennis Assn. National Clay Court Championships, which run July 14-20 at Winston Salem, N.C.

Tourney coming

Sand volleyball action will heat up Friday when the 2013 VolleyOC Youth National Tournament for youth players opens. The tournament runs through the weekend at Huntington State Beach (Newland Street-Pacific Coast Highway).

More than 250 athletes competing on two-person teams are expected for the California Beach Volleyball Assn. event. Club teams from six states, Canada, and New Zealand, are entered in the competition. Action in girls’ divisions 12- through 18-and-under, and boys’ 14U division, takes place daily between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Camp coming

The Huntington Beach Youth Baseball Camp opens Monday at the Huntington Beach High varsity baseball field. The camp will run daily between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. through July 11 and is open to youth ages eight to 14. The cost is $120 per camper.

Football camp

The 2013 Dave White Youth Football Camp at Edison High starts Tuesday at the school. The camp is open for youth grades third through eighth, and runs between 10 a.m. and noon through July 12. The cost is $100 per participant.

The cost for registration taken after Friday, or walk-up registration, is $125.

Edison youth hoops camp registration open

Registration is open for the Edison Basketball Youth Camp which will run July 22-26 at the Edison gymnasium.

Participants will learn the game of basketball in a fun and positive atmosphere. The camp, co-sponsored by PCH Hoops, is in its 14th year.

The cost is $120 per camper (grades 3-8) and includes a complimentary basketball. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. daily during camp week and each individual session runs from 1 to 4 p.m.

Edison softball camp starts July 22

Edison High is offering summer softball camps that will run July 22-26 at the school’s varsity softball field. Camp age groups, dates and costs, are as follows: Grades 3-5 (9 a.m.-noon, includes complimentary T-shirt and ball, $115); Grades 6-8 (noon-3 p.m., includes complimentary T-shirt and ball, $115); Incoming Freshman-Grade 12 (9 a.m.-2 p.m., includes lunch and complimentary T-shirt, $250).

Incoming freshmen and returning prep players are required to have had a physical exam in order to participate in the high school camp.

The 22nd annual Roger Holmes Boys and Girls Youth Basketball Camp opened Monday at Fountain Valley High.

Fountain Valley summer baseball camp underway

The Fountain Valley High baseball program’s summer camp for incoming freshmen and eighth-grade students is now open at the school’s varsity baseball field.

The camp runs between 9 and 11 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday through July 25. No camp will be held July 4. The cost is $100 per camper and checks should be made payable to Fountain Valley High School Baseball.

Lifeletics Baseball camps available

Lifeletics Baseball, located in Huntington Beach, has announced its 2013 summer camp schedule.

The camps, entering their 12th year, are open between 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday now through Aug. 16. Camp locations are in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and south Orange County (Santa Margarita and Trabuco Canyon).
