Briefs: Filia stars in CWS triumph
Edison High grad Eric Filia capped an outstanding performance at the College World Series on Tuesday by driving in a career-best five runs during UCLA’s 8-0 victory over Mississippi St.
The shutout gave the Bruins their first national title in baseball as they swept the Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference, 2-0, in the best-of-three championship series at Omaha, Neb.
Filia, who starts in left field, drove in the first two runs on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning and sacrifice bunt in the second. He had a run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth and finished with a two-run single in the eighth that took the score to 8-0.
Filia graduated from Edison in 2011.

HB takes second
Huntington Beach High’s surf team finished runner-up to the national High Schools division championship trophy at the 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Assn. National Interscholastic Championships.
The 26th annual event was held June 15-17 at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point.
The Oilers, who were after their record 18th national title, finished second to San Clemente in the High School division. Edison placed seventh and Marina was 12th in the overall team standings.
Top-seeded San Clemente won the championship for the fourth straight year and now has 14 titles.
Huntington did lay claim to two individual titles as Matt Passaquindici won the High School Varsity Men’s title, and teammate Jeremy Guilmette won the High School Varsity Longboard title.
John Elles of Huntington Beach was sixth in the High School Varsity Men’s event.
Huntington Beach also was runner-up to the High School Junior Varsity team title. The top-seeded Oilers, who had won the past two JV championships, finished second behind San Dieguito. Marina finished fourth.
The Oilers’ Kyle Kowalski was fifth in the JV men’s standings. Laine Ortiz and Emily Seirsen placed third and fourth, respectively, in the Women’s standings. Huntington’s Niley Smith and Marina’s Nick Neighbors finished second and fourth, respectively, in the Longboard division.
In the Middle School team final standings, teams from Huntington Beach schools Sowers (third) and Dwyer (fifth) finished in the top five in a competition won for the 10th time by Shorecliffs. The Sowers “B” team place ninth.
Ben Seaberry of Sowers finished third in the Middle School Boys event, and Ryan Salazar of Dwyer placed fifth in Middle School Longboard.

Edison hoops camp
Registration is open for the Edison Basketball Youth Camp which will run July 22-26 at the Edison gymnasium. Participants will learn the game of basketball in a fun and positive atmosphere. The camp, co-sponsored by PCH Hoops, is in its 14th year.
The cost is $120 per camper (grades 3-8) and includes a complimentary basketball. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. daily during camp week and each individual session runs from 1 to 4 p.m.

Oilers football camp
The Huntington Beach High Football Camp for youth starts Monday at the school.
The camp, geared to safely prepare intermediate-aged athletes for a successful high school experience, is open to youth grades who will enter grades third through eighth in the fall. Daily camp sessions are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday through June 27.
Campers will participate in four phases of football: field workouts, weight room, speed and power training (grades 6-8 only), classroom and football instruction (grade 6-8 only), and a character development seminar.
