Aviles excited for his ‘Super Bowl’

Share

Milo Aviles can’t wait to put on his pads and go to work in the trenches one more time.

Aviles, who graduated earlier this month, played nose guard for the Huntington Beach High football team this past fall. he’ll go into that role once more Friday when he suits up for the South which will face the North in the 2013 Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game.

The 54th edition of the annual summertime game will get underway at 7:15 p.m. at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

Aviles is one of six local senior players who will play in Friday’s game. Also on the South squad are Alek Torgersen, Miah Frost and Trenton Aschoff of Edison. Izak Faoa of Marina will play for the North.

Torgersen, the Offensive Player of the Year on the 2012 CIF Southern Section Southwest Division Team, will share quarterback duties with Cayman Carter of Corona del Mar. Torgersen threw for 2,337 yards and 17 touchdowns, and rushed for 427 yards and seven TDs in 15 games.

He started at quarterback only in the 2012 season.

Frost, the Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Sunset League, will be up front on offense. Aschoff, the Sunset’s Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year, will join Aviles on the line. Faoa, a two-way lineman and a first-team all-Sunset selection, is listed as a defensive lineman for the North.

Both Frost and Aschoff were named to the All-CIF Southern Section Southwest Football Team.

Defensive lineman Derek Baljeu of Edison and Sebastian DeMartini of Huntington Beach also were selected to the South squad but will not play in the game due to previous commitments, South Coach Scott Meyer, the head coach at Corona del Mar, said.

The North is coached by Fred DiPalma of Katella.

The game’s players and coaches were selected by the Orange County Sportswriters Assn.

“It’s been fun working with these kids,” Meyer said. “Defensively, I think we are really solid. Trenton [Aschoff] and Milo [Aviles] have done really well. Milo is unbelievably quick and Trenton is big and fast.

“Offensively, we’ll run the spread offense which I think really benefits Alek [Torgersen]. I think he will be able to run the ball pretty well, and he has good receivers to throw to.”

For Aviles, an all-Sunset League player who started at nose guard for the first time as a senior, Friday’s game presents him the opportunity to play under the lights once again.

He’ll head to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs later this summer where he said he will major in biology and has designs on becoming a doctor.

“I’m really, really excited about playing in this game,” said the 5-foot-6, 165-pound 18-year-old. “I know I’m not playing in college so I’m thinking of this game as being kind of my Super Bowl. I get to play one more time in front of my family, my friends and my coaches.

“Another thing I’m really excited about, is that I am enjoying playing for the South All-Stars. It’s a great group of guys. On our line, we have some small and quick guys, like me, and some big, strong guys. We have a lot of different talents, almost opposites, really, but the combination really balances things out.”

The winner of Friday’s game will go into the lead in the all-time series. In the first 53 meetings, the record between the North and South stands at 25-25-3.
