Jake Bauers felt the heartbreak of a loss in a championship game last week.

What a difference a week makes.

Bauers, a Marina High senior first baseman, was drafted No. 208 overall, in the seventh round, by the San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday.

Bauers, who has committed to the University of Hawaii, has until July 12 to decide if he wants to turn pro or go to Hawaii.

“The guy can hit to all fields,” Coach Robert Marshall told the Los Angeles Times last month. “He’s had a phenomenal year.”

Bauers helped lead Marina to the CIF Southern Section Division I championship game. The Vikings lost to North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 1-0, at Dodger Stadium May 31.

The Vikings’ run to the title game featured a dramatic, come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Los Angeles Loyola in the semifinals.
