High School Roundup: Five move on to state

When the CIF State Track and Field Championships get underway Friday at Clovis Buchanan High, it will include five local athletes who have qualified for the final CIF meet of the season.

Huntington Beach junior Susannah Oleson secured a spot in the girls’ high jump. Oleson qualified by finishing in a tie for 10th place at 5 feet, 5 inches at the CIF Masters Meet Friday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

On the boys’ side, Edison senior Jeff Thies is one of three Orange County athletes to qualify in the 3,200 meters. Marina junior Matt Dispenza and Edison sophomore A.J. Beynon are among four county high jumpers to earn a spot at the state meet. Edison senior Chandler Thorpe is one of five county competitors to qualify in the pole vault.

Also at the Masters Meet on Friday, Thies won the boys’ 3,200 meter title with a time of 9 minutes 4.38 seconds. Dispenza (6-5) and Beynon (6-5) placed seventh and 10th, respectively, in the boys’ high jump, and Thorpe was 10th (15-4) in the boys’ pole vault.

The two-day state final concludes Saturday.

Boys’ Golf

Fountain Valley High senior Andre Vu will compete Thursday at the CIF/SCGA Regional Qualifier at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.

Vu shot a one-under-par and tied for fourth place at the CIF Southern Section Individual Final Championship at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc on May 20. He’s one of 28 golfers to advance to the regional qualifier.

Vu must finish in the top six Thursday to advance to the CIF State Championship at Quail Lodge in Carmel June 5.
