The Wild Ones, a girls’ under-14 division team from AYSO Region 117 (Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach), won its division championship Sunday at the Mike Fults Memorial Beach Bash at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex.

The Wild Ones played teams from South Los Angeles, Castaic, and Huntington Beach (Region 143), to get into the championship game against Region 55. They finished the tournament with a 2-0-2 record.

In the division final, an early goal from Brittany Rochow put the Wild Ones up, 1-0. Solid defense by Olivia Dillon, Anna Brown, Gena Kaiser, Victoria Donovan and Shelby Burris, kept the attacks under control, while Mariah Zermeno, Shayla Kinney, Sarah Pena and Destiny Rivas fought hard to take charge in the midfield. Izzy Valenzuela and Kelsey Crustinger created some great attacks for the Wild Ones, but the defense from Region 55 was always there to challenge.

Region 55 was awarded a penalty kick late in the game, still trailing, 1-0. A diving save by keeper Sarah Baumgartner on the kick preserved the Wild Ones’ lead.
