Edison senior Jeff Thies posted the fastest qualifying times in both the boys' 1,600 and 3,200 meters running events Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 track and field prelims at Trabuco Hills High. Thies won the 1,600 in 4 minutes 18.80 seconds. He too the 3,200 in 9:18.41, an event that included a fifth-place qualifying time by Fountain Valley junior David Abraham (9:23.80).
Edison's Eamon Smythe turned in the fastest qualifying time in the boys' 800, the junior winning the event in 1:54.36.
Edison senior Chandler Thorpe and Marina senior Paul Thenard were two of nine competitors in the boys' pole vault to hit 14-3, the top mark in the event.
Another local athlete, junior Matt Dispenza of Marina, had the top qualifying mark in the triple jump at 45-feet 9 1/2. Dispenza also placed third in the boys' high jump at 6-5. Edison sophomore AJ Beynon also hit 6-5 in the boys' high jump and was seventh
Marina senior Kylie Nishisaka (10:49.30) had the third top time in the girls' 3,200 meter run. Huntington Beach junior Susannah Oleson was one of nine athletes to hit the top mark in the girls' high jump at 5-5. Edison junior Michaela Schaeffer had the fifth-best mark, 36-10 1/4 in the girls' triple jump.
The CIF Southern Section Divisional Finals are Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
At the Sunset League Track and Field Championships May 2 at Huntington Beach High, the following athletes and relay teams from Huntington, Edison, Fountain Valley and Marina, won event titles:

At the Golden West League Track and Field Championships finals held May 2, the Ocean View girls' team finished second to Segerstrom, and the Ocean View boys' team placed fourth, in the team standings.
Individual league champions for Ocean View were:
Girls: Sam Romo (400, 1:01.48); Jade Kratovil (100 meter hurdles, 17.25; pole vault, 7-0); Treasure Robinson (high jump, 4-10); Savannah Schroeder (long jump, 16-3); Malia Hayes (shot put, 32-7; discus throw, 95-0).
Boys: Kendall Small (200, 23.34; long jump, 20-3 1/2).
At the CIF Southern Section Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the Riverside Aquatics Complex in Riverside, the Edison girls finished in 14th-place and Fountain Valley was 27th, in the girls' Division 1 standings. In the boys' Division 1 standings, Edison placed 16th, Huntington Beach 31st, Marina 38th, and Fountain Valley 43rd.
Edison's Thomas Smith won the consolation final title in the boys' 200-yard individual medley, winning the event in 1:51.03.
In the Division 4 final, the Ocean View girls finished sixth and the Ocean View boys were seventh in their respective team standings. The girls' 200 freestyle relay team of Brynne McNabb, Alyssa Welfringer, Elena Isogawa and Maya Lamperts, won the consolation title in 1:50.86.
Several athletes from Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Marina won individual or team titles at the Sunset League Swimming Finals on May 2. The event was hosted by Marina.
Los Alamitos captured both the girls' and boys' varsity titles. In the girls' standings, Fountain Valley was second, Edison third, Newport Harbor fourth, Huntington Beach fifth, and Marina sixth. In the boys' standings, Edison was second, Newport Harbor third, Fountain Valley fourth, Huntington Beach fifth, and Marina sixth.
