High School Roundup: FVHS hoops coach Holmes steps down

Share

Roger Holmes, who spent the last four years rebuilding the Fountain Valley High boys’ basketball program, has stepped down as the Barons’ head coach.

Holmes announced he was stepping down from his post April 24. In his four years as head coach of his alma mater, his teams posted records of 16-10, 17-10, 21-7 and his final team, a young, inexperienced and hard-working squad that endured several injuries this year, went 9-18.

His 2012-13 team captured the Sunset League championship, the first league title for the program since 1995.

Holmes’ first three teams qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs. A postseason win by the 2011 team was the first for the program in the CIF Southern Section playoffs in 10 years.

“I just felt it was time to step down after accomplishing what we set out to do at Fountain Valley, and that was to bring stability back to the program and get a Sunset League championship banner back in the gym,” Holmes said. “It was just nice to be able to restore some order at Fountain Valley after the school had struggled for so long. The program that Dave Brown built was always one of the top programs in Orange County.”

Holmes, who said he would like to coach again in the “near future,” previously served as head coach at Santa Margarita (four years) and Marina (16 years) before taking over at Fountain Valley.

He feels the future is bright at Fountain Valley.

“I am excited for the program with eight returners and two freshman classes that have gone a combined 48-4 the last two years,” he said. “That includes dominating the Sunset League at 19-1. I am looking forward to following the program’s successes for the next several years.”
