Youth Scene: Legg delivers perfect game

In a 71-pitch masterpiece, Cardinals right-hander Joey Legg put his name in the Ocean View Little League record books with a perfect game in a 10-0 victory over the Pirates in Major Division action.

Legg, working with catcher Kyle Christy, retired all 18 batters, striking out 12 in just his second start of the season.

While Legg did most of the work, he needed help from shortstop Jared Reyes to keep the Pirates off the bases.

In the first inning, Reyes denied the Pirates’ Shane Hoodman a single when he dug out a scorching one-hopper and fired to first base for the out. Reyes had four assists at shortstop.

The Cardinals gave Legg plenty of breathing room, scoring twice in the second and tacking on five runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Sean Yackley.

Jimmy Campbell went three for fourth with a single, double and triple. Nick Shenkman added two hits and scored twice. The Cardinals also received one RBI apiece from Legg, Paul Wagner, Eric Church, Blake Christiano, David Drigla and Angel Zamora.

Giants 4, Yankees 3: An exciting Major division game between the Giants and Yankees wasn’t decided until the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday and in the end, the Giants came away with a 4-3 victory.

Both teams scored three runs in the final inning. In the top of the sixth, the Yankees, trailing 1-0, got a single from Sinjin Choi and Nate Skorhiem reached base on a walk before Mauro Ballinas hit a home run to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. In the bottom-half of the inning, a single by Noah Karliner, double by AJ Valle and walk-off double by Kaleb Plewa, led to three runs for the Giants who pulled out the win.

Ballinas threw the first three innings for the Yankees and didn’t give up a run.

In other Major division action:

Cardinals 5, Yankees 4: Kyle Christy scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to cap a comeback victory for the Cardinals who had trailed, 4-0, entering the fifth inning. Paul Wagner pitched the final two innings to get the victory.

Yankees starting pitcher Sinjin Choi delivered a dominant performance, striking out six batters in four hitless innings. The Cardinals erupted for four runs in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4 as Wagner, Blake Christiano and David Drigla contributed RBI singles.

Jimmy Campbell lined a pair of singles for the Cardinals (4-4) who ran their winning streak to three games.

After Christy’s bold slide into home put the Cardinals ahead, the Yankees’ William Brooks hit an opposite-field triple with two outs, but Wagner settled down to get the game’s final out.

Minor A Division

Knights 7, Bats 4: The Knights and Bats kept pace with each other and traded holding the lead seven times Monday . The Knights finally took the lead in the fifth inning and then hung on.

The Knights’ Colby Turner hit an RBI double off of Bats pitcher Jackson Sles which scored Dylan Scales, and an RBI single in the third by Jonathan Galbraith kept the runs coming in for the Knights. Scales and Turner teamed up for four hits and two RBIs.

Closing pitcher Antonio Ventimiglia, who entered the game in the fifth, was able to hold the Bats hitless over two innings and allowed one walk, no earned runs and struck out six.

The Bats scored three of their four runs in the first, and one on an RBI single by Jake Reagan. Bats opening pitcher Evan Knipe and closer Kai Mullens gave strong performances.

Express 6, Knights 6: The Express and Knights played to a tie score Friday .

Knights ace pitcher Colby Turner thwarted the Express and held them hitless over two innings, allowing no earned runs, walked one, and struck out three. Antonio Ventimiglia helped jump start the offense for Knights, reaching base three times. He scored one run and had an RBI.

Express pitcher Nico Hagadorn held the Knights hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs and struck out one.

The Express jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lucas Flynn started the rally with a single and later stole home. tely able to steal home. Hagadorn also scored on a steal in the inning.

The Knights brought home three runs in the third and tied the scorein the sixth. In the third, Ventimiglia drew a walk which brought home Jackson Penney.

Express quickly matched Knights ‘s strong inning with a four-run inning of its own in the sixth. Express scored on a two-run double by Isaac Ballinas and on a couple of errors.

Hot Rods 12, Rivercats 3: The Hot Rods’ offense hammered seven extra base hits in their win over the Rivercats in the regular season opener for both teams.

AJ Hurtado led the way for the Hot Rods with a home run, his fourth of the year, and a double. Quentin Custodio added two doubles and Gavin Kells, Ramon Lopez and Aiden Hall contributed one each. Kells and Custodio both had a pair of RBIs, and Hurtado, Hall and Jack Pirooz each knocked in a run.

The Hot Rods’ pitching flexed its muscle too, as Custodio, Hurtado and Kells gave up only three hits while striking out 12.

Ian Shafer doubled and Matt Arguello and Daniel Kotkosky both singled for the Rivercats. Kotkosky, Arguello and Bradley Navarro all scored.

Minor B Division

Seadogs 14, Dragons 12: For the second time in a week, the Seadogs and Dragons battled in a tight-knit contest.

The Seadogs jumped out to a 10-3 lead after two innings, the major damage being done by Carson Lane who had an RBI double in the first and a two-RBI single in the second. Caleb Hauser and Dominic Shields also had RBI singles. For the game, Lane and Mason Goldsmith scored three times each.

The Dragons got on the scoreboard in the first when Braydon Bewley singled and came home on a walk by Spencer Baker. Peyton Perry then knocked in both Nico Ruiz and Slater Lighcap with a two-run single. In the third, Perry drove in another run on a single, followed by an RBI double from Mason Valbuena, an RBI single from Braydon Smith,and a two-RBI single from Bode Flanagan to tie the score at 10-10.

The Seadogs took the lead for good in the forth inning with three runs coming in on an double by Owen Eisen. Carson Lane then came on in the top of the fifth to strike out the side and complete the victory for the Seadogs.
