Oilers hard to beat

Huntington Beach High ran its mark of consecutive boys’ volleyball matches won to 42 Friday by sweeping visiting Marina in Sunset League action.

The Oilers ran their league record to 3-0 by taking down the Vikings, 25-14, 25-14, 25-13.

Connor Kotchnik and Alex Wolf had five kills each for the CIF Southern Section’s No. 1-ranked team in Division 1, now 18-0 on the season.

Huntington’s 42-match win streaks dates to last season.

“This was a good team effort,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “We had contributions from everyone. We just need to keep building every match.”

The loss dropped Marina to 0-3 in league, and 11-6 overall.

“Huntington Beach is really strong right now, there’s a reason why they’re the No. 1 team in CIF,” Vikings Coach Rob Kijewski said. “We were overwhelmed by their abilities.”

In other Sunset League games Friday, Los Alamitos defeated Edison (27-29, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17), and Newport Harbor swept Fountain Valley (25-15, 25-11, 25-21).

In a Golden West League match Friday, Ocean View twice took a one set lead on Santa Ana but the visiting Saints rallied for a 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 15-3 victory.

Kory Wills had 12 kills, Tristan Wenschlag 11 kills and Khemet Osborne six blocks for the Seahawks who slipped to 1-3 in league play.

“We fought hard, we came out strong in the first three sets, but missed our opportunity to close out Santa Ana in three games,” Ocean View Coach Seth Cutrell said. “We need to continue to work hard and improve every day.”
