Locals named All-CIF in basketball

Eight local prep basketball players have been named All-CIF Southern Section/Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Assn. in boys’ and girls’ basketball for the 2013-14 season.

“Both guys are well deserving,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “They both worked hard this season and improved their game which is a huge reason we won 23 games this year. They are both wonderful kids with great personalities. Well deserved honors for two outstanding young men.”

Ocean View senior Angel Nieves was named to the Division 3A Second Team. Ocean View Coach Tim Walsh said that Nieves averaged 12 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and set the Ocean View boys’ program record for made three-pointers in a season with 79. Nieves broke the previous single-season mark for three-pointers made set by Ocean View Coach Jimmy Harris in 1992-93.

Both Griffin and Bryson were named First Team All-Academy League.

“It is a great accomplishment for Cameron and Brandon to be recognized by the other coaches in our division, especially since both are underclassmen,” BC Coach Jon Bahnsen said. “With both returning next year, we should have a great foundation for another good year.”

In girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach seniors Paola Roa (First Team) and Stephanie Louie (Second Team) made the Division 1A team. Roa averaged 17 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 4.3 steals per game, and shot 41% from the field.
