Edison in semis of Woodbridge tourney

Edison High won its first three games at the Woodbridge Tournament, and Monday’s 4-0 quarterfinal round shutout of La Habra has put the Chargers into the semifinals.

Sophomore pitcher Kiana Pancino threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and helped her cause offensively with a two-for-three hitting performance. Senior Liz Talataina smashed a three-run home run, and junior Ali Wester went two for three.

The Chargers started the tournament with pool-play action Saturday and edged Rosary, 1-0. Junior Reis Birkett went three for three, freshman Riley Wester two for three, and freshman Aislinn Martin two for three with a double. Pancino fanned 13 and allowed three hits.

Edison also defeated Pomona Catholic, 6-0, in a pool-play game that went six innings Saturday. Riley Wester tripled and scored and Talataina went two for three. Pancino followed up her 13-strikeout performance against Rosary with a 10-strikeout, one-hitter against the Pacers.

“The team set high goals for themselves for this tournament,” Edison Coach Kim Ensey said. “They are coming together at just the right time to put themselves in a good position to win ball games.”

•Marina went 2-1 in its first three games at the Woodbridge Tournament. The Vikings, ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division 1, rode a no-hitter by senior Tera Blanco and big offense to an 8-0 victory Saturday over Garden Grove. The Vikings also edged La Habra, 4-3, Saturday.

On Monday, Blanco (12-2) again threw a no-hitter, this time at La Mirada, but the Matadors used a walk and Marina error, to score the game’s only run to take a 1-0 win.

In a nonleague game March 27, Marina parlayed a few costly Mater Dei errors into a five-run fourth inning, and went on to claim a 5-0 victory over the visiting Monarchs. Junior Sydney McCollum delivered a two-run single during the inning to drive in the game’s final two runs. Blanco, senior Desiree Hagberg and junior Alyssa Sojka all doubled. Blanco went the distance for the win, allowing seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Marina and Edison square off in a key Sunset League opener at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Edison.

•Huntington Beach, the No. 7 team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, continued its best start in 30 years Monday by shutting out host San Clemente, 4-0. Senior Micaela Vierra scattered five hits and struck out five in complete-game shutout performance, gaining her 10th win of the season. Sophomore Kristina Inouye doubled, freshman Ivy Davis had two hits, and freshman Chance Burden had a hit to key the Oilers’ nine-hit attack.

“Our frosh players all played a key role in the win with Davis, Burden and Taylor Livingston all contributing in a positive way,” said Huntington Coach Jeff Forsberg whose team improved to 12-3 overall.

The Oilers launch their Sunset League season at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

•Ocean View ended its nonleague schedule with three victories to improve to 12-3 overall. The Seahawks, ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division 4, first earned a 5-0 road victory March 27 at Fountain Valley, then came back Saturday to roll to 12-1 and 11-1 wins against Magnolia in a home doubleheader.

Against Fountain Valley, junior Billi Derleth pitched a complete-game shutout allowing eight hits and six strikeouts for her sixth win of the season. Derleth got into trouble in a few innings but behind great defensive support, was able to pitch her way out of jams. In Ocean View’s 12-hit attack, senior Tobi Salzman led the way with three hits followed by Derleth and juniors Olivia Russ and Jade Bustamonte with two hits apiece.

In the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Magnolia, sophomore Alyssa Slater pitched a five-inning, complete game allowing only one hits and one run with 10 strikeouts for her fourth win. Junior Anika Ortiz had three hits and drove in four runs, Salzman also had three hits, and Russ and Bustamonte each had two hits during the 12-1 victory.

In the second game, an 11-1 Ocean View triumph, Slater again took the mound, pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts to garner her fifth win. Ortiz finished off the last inning for the save. The Seahawks only had six hits but were aided by eight walks and six hit batters. The offensive highlight for the Seahawks was a three-run home run in the opening innings by Bustamonte who later doubled and finished with five RBIs.

“We played really well last week,” Ocean View Coach Mike McLaughlan said. “Against Fountain Valley, we knew we had to play one of our best games to come out on top, and the girls responded with a great effort both on defense and offense to defeat a tough Fountain Valley team. The girls kept the effort going through the weekend with two wins against Magnolia.”

Ocean View kicks off its Golden West League schedule Friday with a 3:15 p.m. home game against Santa Ana.
