Youth Scene: Surfside wins state title

The Surfside USA Wrestling Club won the state title in the Middle School division at the California-USA Folkstyle Championships March 22-23 at Selland Arena in Fresno.

Overall, Surfside, which holds practice sessions at Huntington Beach High, placed fourth among the 234 clubs that participated from throughout the state in the tournament, which is open to youth wrestlers ages six to 14.

Surfside sent 15 wrestlers to the meet, and nine of the 15 placed among the top eight in the state: Joey Daniel (first-place middle school division, heavyweight), Joey McLaughlin (third, middle school division, 70-pounds), Jesse Daniel (third, 8-9 age division, 80-lbs.), Jacob McLaughlin (fourth, 10-11 age division, 60-lbs.), Kade Ayres (fourth, 10-11age division, 65-lbs.), Dillon Kerrigan (fifth, middle school division, 80-lbs.), Michael Folch (sixth, 8-9 age division, 65-lbs.), Michael McCoy (sixth, middle school division, 70-lbs.), and John McCoy (seventh, middle school division, 117-lbs.).

Jake Lord (10-11 age division, 60-lbs.), Cade Haakenson (10-11age division, 65-lbs.), Evan Gilbert (10-11 age division, 70-lbs.), and Hercules Windrath (8-9 age division, 80-lbs.), each won at least one match. John “Rocky” Windrath (6-7 age division, 45-lbs.) and Davey Wessels (middle school division, 95-lbs.) also participated for Surfside.

Minor A Division

Hot Rods 14, Rivercats 2: The Hot Rods scored at least one run in every inning it batted to rout the Rivercats. The win upped the Hot Rods’ record to 3-2 while the Rivercats fell to 2-4.

The Hot Rods raced out to an early lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hot Rods added a pair of runs in the second, one run in the third, another in the fourth and then busted the game wide open with five more in the fifth.

Myles Lopez led the Hot Rods’ offense in hits with a single and double, and in runs scored (three). Gavin Kells, AJ Hurtado and Van Harmon each scored twice and Quentin Custodio, Jack Pirooz, Ramon Lopez, Carson Jones and Carson Webb each scored once.

The Rivercats managed only two hits against Hot Rods pitching with Ian Shafer collected both Rivercats’ hits including a double. Parker Brooks and Kyle Donoho scored the Rivercats’ runs.

National Junior Basketball

Huntington Beach’s National Junior Basketball sixth-grade All-Star team will compete Friday through Sunday at the National Junior Basketball All-Star national finals at Cal State Fullerton.

The tournament includes six teams representing southern, central and northern California, and Nevada.

The Huntington Beach sixth-grade All-Star team: Kaleb Plewa, Griffin Rhoads, Chase Hoglund, Riley Sterzer, Jason Gagnon Jr., Myles C. Lopez, Jared Clemons, Roman DiMaggio, Jack Miller, Ben Bernstein, Jacob Hanlon, Shane Matsumae, and coaches Chris Lopez and John Hammell.
